Sister Ariadne (ah-ree-AD-nee)
Sister Ariadne Mílaukë
Sister Ariadne (formerly Yalév Ariadne Mílaukë) is a priestess of the Church of Light in the city of Umbar.
While formerly Yalév of House Mílaukë--as is tradition for the eldest daughter of any given generation of a particular noble house--she forsook the title as part of the taking of her holy vows. This led to the incredibly rare occurance of the title being bestowed upon a man, as her only sibling was her younger brother, Odysseus Mílaukë.
As priestess, she was among one of the first clergy members to support Dolorosa Heliodoron's efforts to be elected Pythia after the death of the previously reigning Pythia Neophyta, to whom Ariadne had been a close friend and confidante.
Relationships
History
In the wake of Pythia Neophyta's death under mysterious circumstances, Mother Dolorosa Heliodoron's commitment to both proving the deceased Pythia's death was foulplay and to finding the killers responsible easily swayed Sister Ariadne publicly in favor of a quick election of Dolorosa as new Pythia to deliver a swift justice for the gruesome murder and ensure a continuous, stable city government. Ariadne's close personal relationship with Neophyta made her endorsement of Dolorosa all the more influential to the Sacred Council, and it was not long after that the Council voted unanimously to declare the former Mother Dolorosa as the new Pythia Dolorosa.
Nicknames & Petnames
Sister Ariadne was the first to call Dolorosa "Mama Dolly" before Pythia Neophyta's death while Dolorosa was still a high priestess, in reference to the scolding demeanor she gave to parishioners during a church service where she determined they had not been "enthusiastic enough".
Nicknames & Petnames
Like the rest of their family, Ariadne calls Odysseus by his childhood nickname Métis. Meanwhile, Odysseus calls Ariadne "Double-S" (a poorly made pun of the letter "W") as part of a joke that his sister is now also a Sister of the Church.
History
Then-Yalév of House Mílaukë, Sister Ariadne and Pythia Neophyta met a few years prior to Ariadne's joining of the Church of Light, as Umbar's Houses had frequent interactions with many of the Church's higher ranking members. In conversation between the two, Neophyta's kindness and piety shined through to Ariadne and easily convinced her that joining the clergy would be much more personally fulfilling than serving her house as it's Yalév, a title that only gave extra responsibility and a mere chance of one day becoming Radiant.
After Ariadne swore her vows, she and Neophyta built a much stronger report than was usual for a Pythia and a new priestess, as Neophyta took in Ariadne as her closest confidante and friend.
This close relationship is what would eventually lead to Ariadne's endorsement of Neophyta's-once-critic Mother Dolorosa Heliodoron, as Mother Dolorosa promised the city to swiftly find the persecuters of the suspected murder and bring them to justice.
