Hestia the Kind

Hestia Kítotho

Hestia the Kind1 is the goddess of life, love, beauty, joy, mercy, and music in the world of Kálit. She is the daughter/vassal of the divine Kídet the Wise.

Hestia is said to be one aspect of a single being that governs both life and death. Her deathly counterpart is known as Thanaté the Grim, also called the Grim Reaper.

Impact on Kálit

On a global level, Hestia fosters kindness and empathy in the hearts of Mortal Species. She is also held to be the source of the healing abilities of Kálit's clerics and paladins.

On an individual level, Hestia has only directly intervened in the affairs of the Material Plane twice. On the first occasion, she felt the woes and suffering of the mortal Hákon Blyton as he suffered in the Seven Hells. Moved to tears by the sound of his singing, she took pity upon him, saving him from the Hells and returning him to his tribe based in Greater Umbar.

Hestia stayed with him for a time after his rescue, and much love soon grew between them. They were wed by the elder of Hákon (now Candor)'s tribe exactly three years to the day after his rescue, and Hestia birthed a child soon after, Roderick Blyton. By the time of Roderick's third birthday, however, the other gods (most notably the divine Thraaket the Mighty) came to learn of her mortal family. Hestia was resistant to leaving her husband and child forever, and while debating (or arguing) Thraaket over this fact, the god of war, Ares the Wrathful, took it upon himself to "correct Hestia's mistake", taking the form of a hyena to chase and maul Candor to death.

While critical of Ares' brutal act of murder, Thraaket would not allow Hestia to help a mortal cheat death once more and denied her pleas to return him to the land of the living, while promising her that Candor would this time go to the Halls of Elysium in the Celestial Plane rather than him returning to the Hells. Her three-year-old son, however, she was forbidden from ever again seeing in Kálit, and not until reaping his soul in death as Thánatos would she once more lay her eyes upon him. Any memories the toddler had of her were erased and a mortal family was found and given the divine inclination to adopt him.

On the second occasion, her granddaughter, the paladin Senix Himérou, Dragon Slayers travel through Hell as had happened to her grandfather 60 years prior. While in combat with her captor, Titivilus the Avaricious, in the Circle of Wrath, Hestia heard Senix's prayers for help, answering them with a burst of divine energy, smiting the archdevil and winning the fight.
