Barran Forefire

It seems odd to me that I should include myself in my own chronicle, but some old friends of mine insisted I should. I know not what to say. I would be perfectly happy to go into history as the old archivist. Few remember my adventuring days, let alone the medals I received from King Zalburn before I requested this position.   I am from Troyso, from Arnistino, the port city. My parents died when I was very young, and my uncle took me in. At least, that's what he told me, I was too young to remember. I could have been a street urchin he took pity on. We did not discuss it much.   I have reason to doubt my origins because my uncle was not a trustworthy man, in some respects. He could lie bald-faced to the constable, on the rare occasion one showed up. But he was reliable in his work, as long as he got his percentage. My uncle was well-known in some circles as a fence, a buyer and seller of stolen goods. The store was supposed to be a locksmith service, and we did sell locks and such, but that was not where the food came from.   I spent my youth being groomed as a burglar, learning to pick locks, and pockets, and any stray thing of value. When he died in "mysterious circumstances," I took up life as a thief, to keep myself fed and sheltered. I was working a busy tavern one night, cutting purses, when I overheard one group in the corner mentioning how they couldn't get a lock open. I was curious, they were such an odd grouping, and it looked like they might have money. The Goliath grabbed me by the throat before I could cut a single string.   He demanded to know what I was doing. In hopes of self-preservation, I told them I could get their lock open, if they wanted. Luckily, he put me down. They demanded to know more, so I pulled up a chair, and told them about me. I don't know why I trusted them. Maybe because they were clearly travelers, and I wanted to get out of Arnistino, maybe have a better life in exchange for opening a few locks. Thus began my career as an adventurer, as a rogue.   Along the way, I recieved my calling as a cleric of Dhurros. I learned to use my skills for good, and to protect my comrades. We slowly gained renown throughout many kingdoms. When I finally return to my own land, it was as a hero. We defeated Dorzath the Beguiler, and King Zalburn awarded each of us with the Medal of Valor and the Medal of Honor, quite high distictions, if I may say so. This has been my journey, from sneak thief, to rogue, to cleric and hero, and finally, a simple archivist. I hope those who read this will not judge my beginnings too harshly.
