Ice Fields

The Ice Fields encompass the northernmost area of Ivendarea and also mark the border area between this nation and the neighbouring Darthonis. An area so hostile to any living creature it is only scarcely explored that no one exactly knows what could lie in its heart. Dominated by magical and natural storms cold as death and often carrying pieces of ice sharp as blades with them, the Ice Fields won't let anyone return who dares to enter them.

Geography

The Ice Fields begin where the boreal forests surrounding Canwyl end. The northern outskirts of the Skyreach Mountains smoothly and gradually transition into rocky hills and eventually flat lands that are frozen almost all year round. No one, neither Nyr nor Aapha managed to ever cross this natural border, despite best efforts being made by explorers on both sides.   The Royal Academy of Saratheas has been studying the cause of the strange storms in the region for a considerable time, trying to figure out means to properly map the Ice Fields by developing tools resistant to the phenomenon. So far the strong magical storms always rendered scientific equipment as simple as compasses completely useless.   Yet, while particularly the central and largest portion of the ice fields remains a mystery for now, its coasts and outskirts have been thoroughly explored, estimating that the area stretches across a width of approximately 2000 kilometers at its broadest point, while the distance between its southern outskirts in Ivendarea and the northern border in Darthonis lies at around 700 kilometers.

Fauna & Flora

So little is known about the Ice Fields that it is not clear whether there are living beings adapted to the hostile nature of the region, and while most scholars don't want to exclude this option from the get-go, it is considered highly unlikely to find life in the heart of the Ice Fields.   In the outskirts though, on both sides of the border, a handful of species adapted to the cold feel at home. Along the coastal regions a large variety of birds and large fish and other sea-creatures feel at home on the ice and below it. Further within the country larger predators like wolves and types of wyverns adapted to the ice and cold hunt deer, mountain goats, and lonely wanderers.
