Thalassocracy of Clyvislant
The Thalassocracy of Clyvislant is a sovereign maritime state situated in the Interum Sea, encompassing a network of islands, coastal cities, and seaborne trade routes. It is known for its militarism and staunch patriotism. The nation is a remnant of a once-vast empire that dominated much of the Third Age, with its collapse marking the beginning of the Fourth Age.
Etymology
The name Clyvislant originates from the early settlers' first sighting of the island of Bravik's imposing white cliffs as they approached from the sea. The term combines "Clyvis", meaning "cliff," and "lant", meaning "land," reflecting the settlers' initial impression of a "cliff-land."
Geography
The Thalassocracy is composed of rugged islands and coastal territories, characterized by rocky cliffs, dense forests, and fortified harbours. The capital Bravik is located on one of the largest islands and serves as the political, military, and spiritual center of Clyvislant. The Island of Bravik, the cultural and administrative heart of the nation, is famous for its iconic White Cliffs, which gave Clyvislant its name. These towering chalk cliffs are visible from the sea and symbolize the nation’s resilience. The coastline is dotted with natural harbors, providing strategic points for its powerful navy.
The climate of Clyvislant is temperate maritime. It experiences mild, wet winters and cool summers, with frequent rain and overcast skies. The islands are often swept by strong coastal winds, a defining feature of life in Clyvislant. The fertile soil in valleys and lowlands supports agriculture, particularly grains and root vegetables, while the moors and uplands are better suited for grazing livestock.
The surrounding seas are cold and turbulent However, these waters are rich in fish and other marine resources, supporting a robust fishing industry. The island chain’s natural geography has made it both a fortress and a bastion of maritime dominance, ensuring Clyvislant’s naval supremacy for centuries.
Government
Clyvislant is governed as a unitary absolute monarchy, with all authority concentrated in the hands of the Grand Helmsman, who rules with unquestioned power. The monarch is seen as the embodiment of the nation's will, combining political, military, and spiritual authority. The current monarch resides in the White Throne of Bravik, a symbol of both the nation’s enduring sovereignty and its imperial past.
Below the monarch, a council of advisors known as the Witan exists, though its role is purely consultative. The Witan consists of noble lords, prominent naval commanders, and select administrators who manage day-to-day affairs and ensure the monarch’s decrees are carried out across the nation.
The monarchy's absolute authority extends to every aspect of life, including trade, law, and education. Regional governance is limited, with local leaders directly appointed by the monarch and reporting back to the royal court. Such centralization ensures strict control over the nation’s resources and prevents any regional dissent or factionalism.
Economy
The economy of Clyvislant revolves around naval industries, including shipbuilding, fishing, and maritime trade. The state is largely self-sufficient but maintains controlled trade with select foreign powers to acquire essential resources. Its merchant fleet is heavily armed, ensuring the protection of its goods and enforcing trade regulations.
Culture
Clyvislant’s culture revolves around duty, discipline, and heritage. The people take great pride in their lineage as descendants of an empire that once ruled vast territories. Festivals and rituals often commemorate significant military victories and the endurance of the nation through adversity. The architecture is utilitarian yet imposing, featuring stone fortresses, angular towers, and walled harbors. Artistic expression is largely limited to patriotic murals and carvings, reflecting the stoic and martial values of the society. Despite their isolationist tendencies, Clyvish are skilled craftsmen, particularly in naval engineering and metallurgy, producing some of the finest ships and weapons in the known world.
A defining aspect of Clyvish society is its vehement opposition to magic. This sentiment stems from the catastrophic event known as the Shattering of the Crystal Spires, during which uncontrolled magical forces led to widespread devastation and loss of life. In the aftermath, magic was deemed a dangerous and corrupting influence, leading to its prohibition. Practitioners of magic are persecuted, and any form of sorcery is met with severe punishment. This anti-magic stance has become a cornerstone of national identity, reinforcing the populace's reliance on martial prowess.
Military
The Clyvish Navy is the backbone of the nation’s military and a source of immense national pride. Its fleet is renowned for its advanced ships, disciplined crews, and innovative naval tactics. Coastal fortifications, known as Sea Keeps, provide an additional layer of defense, ensuring that no foreign power can easily threaten their shores.
In addition to its navy, Clyvislant maintains a standing army of well-trained soldiers, though their primary focus is on defending the fortified cities and islands rather than offensive campaigns. Military traditions are passed down through generations, and the state places a heavy emphasis on martial skill, discipline, and loyalty.
In addition to the army Clyvislant maintains an elite force known as the Bulls of Bravik. This fearsome unit specializes in mage and witch-hunting. They are renowned for their unyielding discipline, martial prowess, and strategic cunning in rooting out and eliminating magical threats. The Bulls operate independently from the navy and army, answering directly to the Grand Helmsman and acting as an extension of the monarchy’s authority. To the citizens of Clyvislant, the Bulls of Bravik are heroes who safeguard the nation from arcane corruption. To outsiders, particularly those sympathetic to magic, they are relentless and uncompromising inquisitors.
