Republic of Belavinci
The Republic of Belavinci, officially the Most Serene Republic of Belavinci, is a sovereign state and oligarchic republic with its capital in Cánresa. Belavinci is situated in a geographically diverse region that includes fertile river valleys, coastal trading ports, and rolling hills crowned with mechanical workshops. Its capital, Cánresa, serves as the nation's political, cultural, and industrial hub known for its materialistic cosmopolitan ethos. Founded in 1219 of the 4th Era, Belavinci is the youngest state on Ithon.
Etymology
The name Belavinci derives from the Old Vincian phrase "bela vincere", meaning "beautiful victory." The term reflects the Republic's ethos of triumph through ingenuity and determination.
Geography
Belavinci is a land of stark geographical contrasts, spanning coastal lowlands, fertile interior plains, and rugged mountainous regions. The nation's territory is divided into several distinctive regions.
- The Internum Coast: This western stretch includes key port cities such as Gradura, Llericia and Pescati form the backbone of Belavinci's maritime trade. The coastal cities thrive on shipbuilding, salt production, and international commerce.
- The Arello Plains: A central region fed by the Arello River and its tributaries, this area is the agricultural heartland of the republic. Cities like Aratoria and Arellino are renowned for their vineyards, grain production, and textile workshops.
- The Northern Drylands: The northern coast of Belavinci, bordering the desert features a savannah dryland climate, with rolling grasslands and scattered acacia trees. Coastal breezes mitigate the dry conditions. The coastline is dotted with ports, offering vital trade connections between Belavinci and the rest of Ithon.
Government
Belavinci is ruled as an oligarchic republic, where power resides in the hands of the Serene Electorate, an assembly of merchant families, guild leaders, and elites. Members of the Electorate convene in the Hall of Calces, an iconic structure in Cánresa. The Supreme Doge, elected for life, functions as both the head of state and the chair of the Electorate. While the Doge's role is largely ceremonial, they wield significant influence in mediating between powerful factions within the republic. The governance structure is highly meritocratic within its elite circles, with entry into the Electorate possible through exceptional contributions to trade, innovation, or public works.
Local governance is managed by city councils, which maintain autonomy in trade and regional development while adhering to national laws. In times of turmoil, local governance would be handed over from city councils to condottiere captains, mercenary captains, for a temporary period. These captains would act as military governors, tasked with restoring order and protecting the city and its surrounding territories. While their authority is limited to the duration of the crisis, condottiere captains are known for wielding considerable influence during such times, often shaping local policies to suit their interests or those of their patrons.
Economy
The economy of Belavinci is one of the most dynamic in Ithon, driven by innovation, trade, and industry. The republic's coastal cities thrive on maritime commerce, while its interior regions excel in manufacturing and resource extraction. Belavinci is renowned for its precision engineering, exporting luxury timepieces, tinkerings, and industrial mechanisms across the continent alongside a flourishing market for paintings, sculptures, and architectural designs. Belavinci's ports, particularly Gradura, Aratoria and Trevisti, are major hubs for trade with distant regions, while Norma and Arellino are trade hubs for mining and metallurgic resources with the Dwarves of Okhrizum.
Culture
Belavinci is renowned for its materialistic and progressive worldview. The republic values tangible achievements—whether in trade, invention, or art—over religious or superstitious dogma. Its cosmopolitan cities welcome individuals of diverse backgrounds, fostering a vibrant cultural mosaic. The Carnival of Scintillae is a celebrated annual event in Cánresa, showcasing mechanical marvels and artistic performances. The festival epitomizes Belavinci’s spirit of innovation and creativity.
Military
Belavinci does not maintain a standing army, relying instead on "Condottieri" — elite mercenary companies hired to protect its interests. This practice dates back to the "Risorgimento Belavinciano", a series of upheavals and unifications, during which powerful city-states and factions consolidated the republic through the strategic use of these mercenaries.
Each city contracts its own condottieri for defense, often drawing from renowned companies across Belavinci and its surrounding regions. These mercenaries, equipped with advanced Vincian weaponry and supported by mechanical innovations such as mobile siege engines, ensure the republic’s security. The absence of a formal army reflects Belavinci’s mercantile pragmatism, avoiding the costs of standing forces while fostering competition among the condottieri to provide the best services.
Each Vincian city-state maintains a maritime defense fleet to safeguard its trade routes and coastline, ensuring both the economic prosperity and territorial integrity of the republic. These fleets are tasked with patrolling local waters, escorting merchant vessels, and responding to threats from pirates or rival powers.
At the heart of Vincian naval excellence is the Gradura Maritime Academy, located in the bustling port city of Gradura. This esteemed institution serves as the central hub for training naval officers and sailors across Belavinci. Known for its rigorous curriculum, the academy blends theoretical education with hands-on training aboard training vessels. Graduates of the academy are held in high regard and often ascend to prominent command positions within their city-state fleets.
