Abyssal Larvae

Every evil has to starts somewhere.
— Demonologist
Abyssal Larvae are what becomes of an evil soul condemned to the Abyss. Once, countless millions of them carpeted the Abyssal layers, squirming, screaming, and crying, hunted by demons for sport or food, or wisked away to become demons themselves. After the End of All Things, and the destruction of the Abyss, Abyssal Larvae have become a great deal less common, now spawning only from the terrifying maws of Abyssal Harvesters.

Description

Abyssal Larvae are dog to human-sized maggots with the faces of humans. Their blubbery flesh is covered with discolorations (some say the shades of color depend on their sin) and coarse, sharp hair and their human mouth is filled with an impossible number of needle-like fangs. Some have horns, or cancerous tumors growing across their body, drool acid, or any number of other charming physical traits.
Though they wear the human face of their past life, little remains of that. The Larvae are mindlessly hungry, spending most of their time eating and weeping uncontrollably. Everything within reach is a potential meal to the Larvae, who will gnaw on stone or wood if there is no flesh to feast on. No matter how spoiled or rotten, Larvae will greedily devour it all.   All Larvae are proto-demons and all can with time grow into the other form of demons. Exactly which one they become depend in equal measure on what evil they did to condem them to the Abyss, and the attentions of the demons 'raising' the larvae.
When it is time to ascend, Larvae cocoon themselves into a fleshy pod, ringed with teeth, tentacles, blinking eyes, and the stench of sin. Most grow to minor forms of demons like a Mane and most from there ascend the demonic hierarchy by fighting, eating, and destroying.

In the World

Like Abyssal Harvesters, the Larvae are key to allowing demons to grow their numbers and it makes them a target for every demon hunter, every wizard with a grudge, every do-gooder adventuring party. Where the demonic hordes were once infinite, the End of All Things shattered that notion as thoroughly as it did ther home world. Never the most level-headed, demons made their position worse when they lashed out in the aftermath, making themselves an early target for the survivors of the End.   Today, most Larvae are kept deep within any demon held territory, and are the victim of much less casual abuse than in their Abyssal days.

Abyssal Harvesters

Blasphemous incubators of souls, Abyssal Harvesters are fragments of the Abyss come to life. With the Abyss gone, the Harvesters are the only way a demon can turn a mortal soul into a abyssal larvae.

Unexpected Results

In the Old World, even in the infinite multitude of the Abyssal hordes, there were still existential rules to be observed. Only mortal souls could reach the abyss, and only some at that. Through the bargain of deities, cosmic agreements between powers, or other quirks reality, there were souls that never saw the Abyss.   That isn't true anymore. With everyone now thrown down onto Ithekshem by the End of All Things, all bets are off. Anything the demons can get their claws is at risk, and it has given rise to entirely new kinds of demon that would have been impossible.

Ew, they have human faces. Yikes forever! This is really fascinating. I never really thought about how demons would be born.

Everything comes from something. With the Demons, it's usually from the Abyss itself or from mortal souls... And both of those are no longer an option :D
