Koaelore (koh-ay-lore-ay)

Koaelore is the largest religion in Ithan. It believes in a small pantheon of nine deities. These nine deities are collectively known as the Koaelora. The leader of the Koaelora is Saecu - the god of truth, justice, and blindness.

Priestly Rites of Blood

To become a High Priest of Koaelore, there are several bodily modifications that are undertaken. These body modifications are known as the "Rites of Blood". The rituals involved are elaborate and involve gouging out the left eye of the soon-to-be High Priest, piercing their septums, and tattooing their primary deity's symbol on the bottoms of their feet. The gouging out of the left eye is symbolic of Saecu's gouging out of his eyes to be able to discern the truth from any lie and see the true motivations of any heart, and the keeping of the right eye is symbolic of the High Priest's own humanity. Tattooing the soles of the feet is symbolic of the High Priest's path being that of their deity. The piercing of the septum is to mark one as a Priest and to set them apart from the common people. Those with septum piercings are seen as people who will provide safety and supplies to those in need due to the Priests all having septum piercings.
