Congenital Blindness Condition in Ithan | World Anvil

Congenital Blindness

Blindness is defined as the inability to see with any clarity in the world of Ithan. Congenital blindness is blindness that one is born with. Congenital blindness only has been recorded to affect the descendants of the Hunay. Of all of the fourteen Races of Ithan, only four are descended from the Hunay and only those four are affected by congenital blindness. Congenital blindness is a rare condition. It affects Merfolk the most often. Merfolk are affected at a rate of 1:300, Beastfolk at a rate of 1:500, Humans at a rate of 1:1,000, and Cait Lee at a rate of 1:2,500.

Gifted by the Gods

Followers of Koaelore believe that congenital blindness is a gift from their deities - the Koaelora. Those who are born blind are said to be able to discern truth from lie and see into the proverbial hearts of others. This belief stems from a legend surrounding the deity Saecu in which the god gouges out his own eyes to gain the abilities.

I really like the cultural importance of blindness for followers of Koaelore. I also like that you've included the rates that each species tends to be affected. :D
