Dire Wolf Species in Isles of Edren | World Anvil

Dire Wolf

The dire wolf is an oversized canine, that can be found throughout the Isles, both in the wild and as a working animal. Typically found in forested or colder regions like the Blackened Gap , Croyset Forest , and Goll Mountains and Mines, but can be found interspersed amongst all of the Isles in nearly every biome.    Dire wolves can be fierce hunters especially compared to wolves or dogs. They are significantly stronger and larger, nearly 50% larger than regular wolves, while still being just as agile and competent trackers.   Similar to their cousins, 'regular' wolves, they will travel in packs, hunting for prey. At times, a dire wolf will break off from its pack, and join a wolf pack after killing the alpha wolf, taking on the role as the leader. The reason why this happens is still not understood, but some experts suggest that possibly the dire wolf was cast out from its original pack, so it takes over another.   Due to their dangerous nature, most either avoid dire wolves at all cost, or they are hunted with extreme prejudice. Their pelts can be used for a variety of purpose, but are also oftentimes taken as trophies. Though most fear dire wolves, the goblin Mining Federation has found them to be extremely useful when properly tamed. They serve as working dogs, being able to pull carts, act as mounts for those that need to move quickly through the mountains, and their mere presence helps intimidate possible looters. Dire wolf taming is a very difficult task, and the process is a guarded secret by the goblins that do it.
