The Phoenix's Perch

The Phoenix's Perch is a run-down tavern on the deep southern outskirts of Shrivelshanks, in the Everness Forest

Purpose / Function

The Phoenix Perch's customers are mainly roughnecks from nearby Shrivelshanks as well as members of the various Kryla factions.    They only serve a handful of different spirits, various beers and ales made from ingredients of dubious quality and possible toxicity. The owner and proprietor, Cord has owned the tavern for many years, and took it over from his father before him.   There is almost always a nightly brawl of some kind, which Cord welcomes because there always seems to be a few coins spilt to pilfer, and several unconsumed drinks to recycle.

Architecture

The building is a squat, one-story bulding that is a stiff wind from collapsing. Doors swing on broken hinges, chairs creak and threaten to collapse at any moment. An attic space over the great room, accessed by a pull-down ladder by the back door, stores supplies, while a cellar accessible down a trapdoor behind the bar holds the liquor.   The main door does lock, barely. It is stout and fairly sturdy but does not cling to the doorway like it should. Outside the front door is a porch, and on the awning over the door is an old falconer's perch attached to the gable. On the perch is strapped an ancient statue of the god The Phoenix that was stolen from a temple long ago, defiled, and eventually made it to the inn. It is made of stone, heavily chipped and gaudily painted. It appears to have been set of fire a number of times.   There is a dilapadated kitchen behind a partition at the bar, where Cord's wife occasionally cooks potatoes and questionable sausages.   In the annex are two small rooms for overnight guests, 10sp/night. Usually these are occupied by customers too drunk or injured to even make it out the front door. These two rooms were an addition to the original structure within the last 10 years.

Tourism

95% of the customers of the Phoenix Perch are locals, although there is the occasional traveler or trading party. Strangers are not usually welcomed unless they are obviously wealthy, in which case every effort is made by the proprieter and his clientele to separate him from his money - all of it.
