Katagarian Oaksey (a.k.a. Kat)

Katagarian "Kat" Oaksey is a businessman, trader and collector of odd merchandise who travels from town to town along the eastern part of Melas brokering trade deals. He also is known for his romantic attachments to women all throughout the regions, but his infatuation with a woman from his past is known to him alone.

He connects buyers with sellers and providing access to strange and interesting artifacts. He has a reputation among the wealthy elite as being able to procure almost any item - for a price. His connections are formidable and his ability to broker a deal is legendary.

In addition, he is known to be quite a romancer and maintains relationships with women in most of the cities he visits. Sometimes the women he sees aren't even married to the powerful men he does business with, although that seems to be rarer lately.

Many years previously, as a young boy, he was complicit in the theft of a highly valuable magic item from his father's store. He has kept an eye out for the thief for many years, and is always on the lookout for the lovely, redheaded teenage girl who stole his father's pendant and broke his heart....

He possesses a special pouch that teleports its contents to a secure, hidden location in Biera. All excess cash and small valuables are sent there to be retrieved by a trusted confederate and deposited in a bank, or Kat can retrieve them himself as from a Bag of Holding. He also owns a magical pocket-watch that alerts him when it's the best time to make a sale. There are other magical items in his extended stock that he intends to either sell or use, depending on circumstances.

Personal history

Growing up in Biera, Katagarian (or "Kat) worked with his father in his general goods store in the marketplace. His mother had died when he was 12 and the wounds still had not healed. It affected his father more, who never seemed to recover his previous good humor. They began to grow more and more apart as Kat moved through his teen years. His responsibilities in the store increased as his father took more frequent trips out of town, in search of newer and more interesting items for the store.

A trio of teenage girls began hanging around the shop when he was 18 - their leader was fresh faced with flaming red hair and sparkling green eyes. He became infatuated, and seemingly she felt the same way. Unfortunately, he let her convince him to assist them in procuring a magic item the shop had for sale, and the trio soon disappeared with the artifact, never to be seen again. Kat's father, returning from a trip, discovered the magic item gone and blamed Kat with bitter disappointment and blame. Their relationship deteriorated to the point where Kat felt he had to leave.

He worked as a day laborer on the docks for several years until he eventually worked his way up as an import manager for one of the shipping companies out of NiChow. Receiving word his father was ill, he returned to Biera only to find himself too later - his father had died without leaving behind any final words to his estranged son. Kat immediately gathered the stock of the store and closed it down, intending to find quick buyer for the remaining merchandise, until he realized the lucrative nature of even the most mundane magical items in its stock. He quickly formed his own business and began helping customers find goods they needed, first from his own items and then moving on to brokering deals all across eastern Melas.

From an early age, he enjoyed the company of beautiful women and had a knack of seeing a different set of women in every town he frequented. None ever truly captured his heart as his thoughts always returned to the redheaded girl that possessed his thoughts. As his influence grew and his business interests spread throughout the region, his visits have become welcome sights to many women and men both, because his charisma and business sense always brought great success. 

In recent years, he began to hear stories of a particular ship captain with fiery red hair who made a name for herself in the shipping industry. Sometimes he wonders if it is the same girl from his past, and what he would ever do if they crossed paths again.

He worked hard to make his way up from humble beginnings as his father's stock boy. He sometimes wonders if his father would be proud of him.

Failures & Embarrassments

For some people, opening their heart in moments of weakness to allow yourself to be used by someone you love would harden it forever to those that would seek to win it, but his experience with the redheaded girl and the theft of the artifact from his father's store only set his resolve to prove people wrong. That the love they felt for each other could eventually survive the early betrayal, and somehow even after his father's passing he could earn the older man's respect back.

Kat has a knack for reading people's thoughts and emotions, knowing when a seller has merchandise that truly has value or not, and how serious a buyer is on their desires. He is shrewd in his business dealings and clever in following leads on various items his clients are searching for.

Because the father died before they could reconcile, he will never know but he draws on his memories of the father and his beliefs and values for inspiration.
