The Brothers Geographic Location in Islands of the Hylian Sea | World Anvil

The Brothers

Once upon a time, these volcanoes at the centre of the island were contested territory, with the mole-like mogmas and the rock-loving gorons vying for space across and within the mountains. These days of strife are behind the two tribes, who now coexist peacefully. The level of magma within the volcano is kept low by a series of wide subterranean ducts, the result of cooperation between mogmas and gorons. These ducts have allowed the forest around The Brothers' base to thrive, and their slopes and ridges are vibrant with life.   Gorons and mogmas both enjoy a diet primarily consisting of rock. As such, the mountains continue to be gradually hollowed in the search for richer, tastier food. Within these cavernous hollows, many of the island's gorons and mogmas make their homes. While both tribes can appear intimidating to those unaccustomed to them, they are welcoming of outsiders, particularly those who come to trade or perform music -- mogmas and gorons are passionate dancers. Have a care, however, as these friendly peoples are not the only inhabitants of the mountains, and though the inhabited caverns are structurally sound and safe, there are many abandoned caves teetering on the edge of a cave in.

Fauna & Flora

  • Arpagos. These saurian avians are rarer than they once were in the skies above The Brothers. With hollow bones and tough hides, they were hunted for materials with enthusiasm. Records indicate that a dark magician made a pact with the arpagos centuries ago. Since then, these ferocious fliers have taken to attacking any intelligent creature they see on the peaks. Possessed of sharp claws and a long maw full of sharper teeth, they doggedly pursue their prey.
  • Boes. The mysterious boes may be found in the deep crags and cracks in the mountains. The boes of The Brothers are generally docile, preferring to let insects or small mammals fall into their lairs as opposed to hunting larger prey. The dust boes leave behind adds an earthy flavour to dishes, and is used as a seasoning by mogma and gorons to add extra flavour to their rocky delicacies.
  • Bombchus. The explosive rodents that inspired the famous mobile explosive. Wild-eyed and nocturnal, bombchus are omnivorous creatures that have volatile gasses in their stomach. When these gasses are exposed to air outside of the gut, the poor bombchu explodes. They have evolved to grow natural explosives at the ends of their tails, which they can lob at threats. Brave gorons and mogma will trim the bomb from the tails of wild specimens, which may then be used as a regular explosive. This daring task was once used as a rite of passage by the inhabitants of the mountains. Eventually, however, the tribes realised that this task took more lives than it progressed. Some mountain folk have tamed bombchus and harvest the bombs from their tails regularly. While this is a useful industry, it is dangerous. The explosion of one of these creatures sets off others nearby.
  • Chuchus.
  • Dodongos
  • Mountain Goats
  • Nejirons. Strange entities with soulless, boring eyes. They resemble boulders while asleep, and large, curled gorons while alert. These bizarre boulder creatures can explode at will. Indeed, this seems to be the only purpose their existence serves. They subsist on dirt and insects, and no one is quite sure how they come to be.
