Black Dragonkin

Descendants of Black Dragons

A dirt ring, hastily drawn in the dirt, disappears underfoot as boots scuffle and move. Tails twitch and flick as muscles shift under scales, shifting to easily handle the blow and subsequent grapple that came from the youngling. It is this moment of strength that they live for, the displays of wrestling and hand-to-hand combat that mark their days and define their societies. Strength is what matters most as without it, how can one ever hope to properly serve their homeland?   Black Dragonkin are the descendants of one of the Elder Races and a Black Dragon. Although their features and strength are obviously inherited, the cruel personalities that run wicked through the Black Dragons rarely exist within the Black Dragonkin. They strive to serve with their strength and prowess, removing themselves from an assumption that has driven them to live in small tribes and villages or with their own kind in the Fearsome Maw.   Above all else, these people respect strength and the pursuit of such. This is their defining purpose, the ability to serve. In many ways, the Black Dragonkin are much like the Clay Giants, using their strength to help others, but the Black Dragonkin bring with it their own downfall. The ego of Chromatic Dragons is difficult to shake, even when those same Dragons often consider you a half-breed.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Black Dragonkin share some specific traits with their Draconic ancestors that prove their ties to the Black Dragons. Their facial features are often sharp, defined on the jawline by large protruding spikes and a ribbed crest on their head. Fin-like ears and a pointed tail as well as large muscular bodies are also common in Black Dragonkin.   All Dragonkin inherit sharp claws, extremely strong and protective scales, as well as a breath weapon that they can use. Some of these traits are affected by the color of the Dragonkin as the many varieties of Dragons also vary greatly in their abilities. Black Dragonkin often have a resistance to acid or other corrosive materials while their breath weapon is able to melt most mundane materials without issue. Black Dragonkin are considered to have one of the strongest breath weapons of all Dragonkin.   Common Colorations

Common Colorations

While their coloration is in their name, Black Dragonkin can still come in a variety of shades of black, matching the shades found in the scales of Black Dragons. Their scales can range from a black color that is nearly a dark grey to the deepest black found in the world. The color of their eyes has a much smaller range, often only being yellow, brown, red, green, grey, or purple.

Social Structure

Black Dragonkin rarely mingle with other varieties of Dragonkin as this is often seen as beneath them. Even amongst their own color, a hierarchy of power is established based upon the physical strength of an individual and how much they can contribute to their society. While they do not practice the cruel ways of the Black Dragons they are descended from, outsiders have noted that Black Dragonkin tend to be cold and uninviting, no matter the circumstances.   Rarely do these people find suitable homes outside of the Fearsome Maw or within small tribal communities. Most societies of other races tend to ostracize them for the reputation that the cruel Black Dragons tend to have. This makes it difficult to join a society and serve as productive members, so Black Dragonkin prefer to make their own cities and villages.

To be fair, no wonder they seem cold and uninviting to outsiders if people judge them on sight. I love the beginning paragraph and the section about colour variation.
