Scheillion Pass Settlement in Irrelion | World Anvil

Scheillion Pass

A city far to the north, and a port town, the shipyards here produce mighty vessels that sail the seas, hauling tons of cargo, and large fishing vessels brave the turbulent northern seas to haul back exotic aquatic life, be it for cuisine, or magical purposes.

Demographics

Elf (37%), Human (31%), Half-Elf (15%), Dwarf (10%), Halfling (3%) Dragonborn (2%) Half-Orc (1%), Halfling (1%)

Government

The city, being somewhat detached, has two governors appointed by the king himself, meant to direct and rule the city in tandem.

Defences

The wall that surrounds the city is relatively small, and made out of thick stone bricks from the nearby mountains, which makes it quite sturdy, but hard to repair when necessary. The seawall has cannons that stick out of it, with a recessed area behind it, under the walkways overhead, if any naval attack were to occur, the cannons here can attack anywhere in the waters near the city.

Industry & Trade

Much of the city's industry comes from luxury goods. Wines and seafood and spices and dyes, many of the simple laborers see marginally better standards of living than other places, due to their work created much more valuable goods.

Infrastructure

Vineyards outside of the city make wine, as the docks process cargo and fish, and dye-workers make luxury clothing with the same spices and seasonings that are packaged and sold for large sums to nobles and the wealthy.

Districts

Seaspray Gully

Despite being further back than the docks, the waves that crash upon the seawall during rough weather and windy days causes a fine mist to fly back, falling upon this district. Many of those who live here are fishermen and oceanic traders who might be gone for weeks at a time, and this district is actually very quiet and empty at many times due to this.

Oak Meadow

A few of the noble and wealthy sought to live here in the city, but wanted to be able to gaze upon the ocean. They had houses built with strong and sturdy oak, and coated in magical salves and oils that would ward off any water damage or rot to their homes. The few homes here are lavish, and have balconies and windows stacked upon the eastern sides, facing the ocean.

Citadel

Once a naval defense base, there are still a few decommissioned naval cannons that sit along the wall of this fortress. The governors of the city, along with military and guard officers meet here often to discuss matters of the city, and to establish trade deals with other nations, primarily the Estrait Kingdom, as a large naval trade between the two has stood for the past few decades.

Ruby Port

Many of the buildings here are simply covered workshops, with construction and repair of ships always ongoing. Towards the northern end, a large shipyard makes the largest sailing vessels, and rolls them right into the water from the port. The docks are long and sturdy, and ships come and moor and weigh anchor and leave constantly, and the never-ending flow of cargo to-and-from the docks is a reminder of how important that naval trading is to the city's economy.

The Hill

A small park in the heart of the city, small walkways traverse through trees and hedges, creating meandering paths that is a popular place for promenades by the wealthy and affluent.

Winegate

The mountains to the southeast start off as slowly sloping hills, which have proven to be incredibly fertile, and, paired with warm and humid sea breezes, have proven to be an excellent climate for grapes. Many vineyards can be seen spread across the foot of the mountain, trellises holding grapes, and large vats where they are crushed throw the aroma of the fruit across the wind. The district itself has many fermenters and brewers, that take the grapes and/or crushed pulp, and ferment it into various wines, to be sold as a luxury good across all Irrelion.

Breadgate

A sister district to Winegate, alongside the vineyards are fields of wheat, which is harvested and milled, and brought back here to be turned into bread, and, of particular importance, hardtack, a naval ration that lasts exceptionally long. Many bakers can be found here turning grains and flours into various pastries, breads, and hardtack, to be sold to sailors and locals.

Pigend

To the north of the city are swine farms. Given that pigs are easy to raise, and the climate is warm year round here, hardly seeing snow, if at all, during winters, the pigs thrive and grow fast and large. They are brought to town and slaughtered, sold fresh, or packed in salt and preserved, to be sold as rations for travelers or sailors. Many pig farmers and butchers live here in this district, haggling for deals with sailors, who don't particularly need salted meats, but would much prefer it to bland hardtack and fish.

Spicebowl

Along with the vineyards and wheat fields of the west, towards the northwest, there are fields growing luxury spices and herbs, only able to be grown effectively in the warm, damp climate along the sea. They are brought here and processed. The most obvious use is as-is, with seasonings and spices being as expensive as they are, it would make sense to sell as is, but there are a few other uses. Certain herbs have mild medicinal properties, and can be turned into balms and salves, and a handful of various herbs and spices act as potent dies, creating vivid and bright colors. Spice farmers, apothecaries, and dye-workers all live here, finding various uses for the plants only able to be grown here.

Meatport

With the success of swine farming in the north, a few farmers imported and began breeding cows towards the south of town. Some are raised simple, and meant to be used purely for milk, cheese, and meat, and live short lives. However, some high-quality cows are raised, being fed high quality feed, and being taken care of. These cows are worth a small fortune on their own, and are sold still-living to be slaughtered and cooked at the whim of the buyer, usually a noble hosting a feast. The docks here have been made by the cow farmers, and welcome boats that are specially equipped to move meat and living cows.

Cabbage Spring

Towards the south of the town, fields stretch out growing green vegetables, Cabbage being one of the stable ones. It is used often in local stews and pottages, and many elven cuisines make great use of it. Those who live here are mostly farmers, working the fields and growing staple crops.

Gloom Gate

Belying it's name, this district is actually quite nice, and serves as the home for many fishermen that fish the local waters. The name is due to the two towers built into the sides of the gate here. Two towers were built around the Portcullis, and raised high, in order to give a further view out to sea. Part of this is for a duty known as "Gloom-Watch", where guards are meant to keep an eye for incoming inclement weather, and, if it seems that a storm may come, warn the townsfolk and ships nearby in waters by use of a large bell.

Assets

The city does not hold any significant strategic reserves outside of it's coffers, as the weather means that the land can be worked almost year round, and the waters can always be fished, and as such, there is almost never any concern about starvation or not having sufficient food.

History

The city sits on a bay, which was used in the past by small ships to hide from the wicked storms of the ocean. People would settle into the area, but eventually, a pirate warlord made a small fortress here, to impose his power onto local waters. Eventually, it was turned into what is now the Citadel, however, legend has it that his son, and heir to his fortunes, was not a violent man, nor did he wish to be a pirate, and just let people move in and seek the riches of the sea. By the time the city was folded into the kingdom, there were no more descendants of the pirate warlord, and the citadel had turned into a city hall of sorts.

Points of interest

Tavern: The Noble Ale House

Owned by the young Eleanor Palomarez, she is a young human, and a master sommelier. The tavern is a large building, fancy wood beams of various shades have intricate carvings and designs, and the rails and banisters are deep and stained and polished. The inside is lit thoroughly, and one glance tells you how high of a status one must be to dine here. Fancy cured meats and cheeses hang on racks and hooks from the ceiling, and balconies line the upper wall, with curtains and tables with tablecloths, scented candles, and cushioned chairs. The signature meal here is a beef roast with almonds and sage, served with goat cheese and beetroot soup, a frosted-roll dessert, and served with a juniper mead and 5 year vintage wine. It is located in the Oak Meadow district, touching the Ruby Port.

Alchemist: Prismatic Tinctures

In the Seaspray Gully district, a small thatch-roofed house made of simple wood and without any windows, can be found at a small crossroads. Syllin Othronus is an old elven lady, who has mastered using what the sea has to offer for potions. The inside is lit by a light blue sea-shell candelabra, and sconces on the wall made of spiraled shells. large bookcases line the wall, with notes haphazardly sticking out from between books, and even the pages of the books, and the floor is usually covered with many different tools and ingredients. The only tidy thing are her workbenches, which are kept immaculate to avoid contamination or mistakes.

Jeweler: Crown Eye

Owned by a middle aged Elf, by the name of Ahvain Wasanthi, this two-story building is on the west edge of the Ruby Port. It is made of thick timber beams, and has a rich brown tiled roof. Inside, it is filled with various display cases showing off various gems and metals, meant to help customers decide on custom jewelry. Much of his customer base is sailors, who customarily keep rings on them, made of expensive gems and materials, so that if they die at sea, the rings can be given to their families and sold for good money.

General Store: The Crate and Barrel

Owned by the very shrewd Roger Hornsby, an old human and once-sailor, on the very eastern side of the Ruby Port, nestled between shipyards, this prominent store stands with large signs, announcing it's presence. Roger does not deal in bulk cargo, unlike a few other shops in the area. He instead buys and sell more specialty goods. Paper and ink, looking-glasses, clothing; The type of things that a sailor with large amounts of money would love to have.

Architecture

Many of the houses here are sturdy and built of thick wood. While simple from a glance, the craftsmanship of the local woodworkers shows themselves upon close looks, where small engravings can be found running along door-frames and windowsills. The northern seas are rough, and the seawall of the port does little to stop the sea-spray from coating the city, so the houses are built strong and well to keep the insides dry.

Geography

The nearby bay is an offshoot from the rest of the ocean. It comes in from the northeast, heading Southwest, and then turning Northwest, meaning that the city is somewhat shielded from the rougher waves and currents of the ocean. The mountains nearby begin quite slow, and are a good source of stone.

Climate

Warm almost all year round, it may only snow once every few years here, and that may not even last a day or two. Warm northern winds bring damp rain which billows over the city.

Natural Resources

The ocean provides much of the city's valuable resources, alongside the spice and grape crops outside the city. Despite being a sizable mountain range, the western mountains have not had any sufficient yield of ores or resources for anyone to justify mining it, but some quarrying does go on for the stone.
