Application of Negative Nth-Dimension Theory

The discovery and application of Einstein's Negative N-th Dimensional Theory was the key to unlocking the stars for humanity. Before then, we had our fleets and our ships, but we were constrained to our own solar system and early generation ships. With the unlocking the mathematical formulae of the reality, we transcended past the limits of physics and now the entire galaxy was in our grasp.

With the development of the Negative Nth-Dimension theory, it only took ten years for humans to develop their first faster-than-light drives. While the idea of mass-energy conversion was simple enough in the application, the challenge was generating enough energy to (safely) convert the mass of an entire vessel, everything inside, and its inhabitants to negative-mass to allow for a transition into one of the negative-space dimensions.
Roughly a dozen governments, forty corporations, and an unknown number of solo tinkerers and inventors worked around the clock to be the first to create an engine capable of performing the transition. Interestingly, the research developed along very similar lines. Things were so close enough that at least a half dozen teams designed very similar technology in a very short period of time, making patents for the technology impossible, except for a few specific pieces that marked the individual designer more than anything else. 
With those developed, it quickly set the groundwork for the surge in extrasolar exploration and colonization. The challenge that revealed itself was the development of fuel sources with enough power to fuel larger and larger vessels. As of the 2600s, shipbuilding technology exceeds the capabilities to propel the largest warships and cargo vessels at faster-than-light speeds, given that their mass exceeds the energy output possible to transform it to negative mass and slip between the dimensions. 
This has led to two main streams of Negative Dimension Engine development: Increasing transfer power and decreasing power consumption. Interesting things have occurred from them, including the new development of Negative Dimension Engines small enough to be placed aboard single-person fighters and transports, potentially revolutionizing shipboard technology and making ownership more accessible and viable for everyday use.

Localization

While these negative nth-dimensions exist at all times and in all places, they can only be accessed when outside of a planetoid-level gravity well. Only in zero gravity does humanity possess the energy capabilities to complete the negative-mass transferral. As such, it makes it impossible to access the dimensions on a planet or moon, or even within their gravity well, as well as the gravity well of a star.
