Johanna

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Johanna is a sapien with average height and a rather lean build who, despite not afflicted by any kind of lasting disease or particularly malnourished, often comes across as a frail person in poor health.

Facial Features

Johanna has a lean face with sunken eyes and cheeks, prominent smile lines, and a very tall, sharp nose. Her face gives off an unhealthy and very tired impression, though she is neither.   Despite such an impression, few make the mistake of assuming that she is a weak person either physically or mentally, because Johanna has sharp eyes with a fierce gaze   Johanna usually ties her hair to a ponytail from the middle of the back of her head.

Apparel & Accessories

Johanna usually dresses herself in multiple layers of typical Rudian villager clothes made of thick fabric, often with other pieces of clothing such as waist cloth or sack on top depending on her activity for the day.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Johanna is arrived in Brillam seventeen years ago, having somehow and for some reason crossed the Holdo Pass carrying a yet-unborn child with her all by herself.

Employment

Johanna is currently employed as bookkeeper of the give name Inn, the largest lodge in Brillam. She has risen to this position after undergoing several changes in position from a cleaner, each time rising to a role that makes bigger decisions than in the previous role.   It is unknown what Johanna did for a living prior to her arrival in Brillam.

Intellectual Characteristics

Johanna is clearly a very well-learned person, evident from her manner of speech and proficiency with bookkeeping.

Personality Characteristics

Hygiene

Johanna maintains very good hygiene both when working in the inn, where everyone is naturally expected to be clean, and during her daily life.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Johanna's mysterious arrival at Brillam from her homeworld Zaartum that she refrains from elaborating, her evidently being a learned person, and her accounting skills that moved her position in the inn from a dishwasher to a bookkeeper all point to Johanna being affiliated with a trading guild or the likes before her migration to Micleta. Some villagers think she may still be affiliated, or at the very least maintain contact with her previous organization, and that her relation will impact Brillam in some way in the future.

Family Ties

Johanna's only family is her child, Martel. Nothing else about the family she had before is known other than that she left her mate behind when she moved to Micleta and that Martel was the first child that both she and her mate had. Johanna does not often discuss her past life including her old mate, which the villagers respect and never probe deep.   Despite a few villagers' suspicion that Johanna left her mate out of hatred or fear, Martel remarks that Johanna appears to miss them very much.

Religious Views

While Johanna respects the titans' great wisdom, she does not venerate them as much as most other humans do, having built up her worldly views from her own experiences.

Social Aptitude

Johanna is a very soft-spoken person who is very rarely seen excited or agitated.

History

Martel was born after Johanna arrived at Brillam, and the two have lived together in a small cottage in the second district of the village.

Nicknames & Petnames

Coming from the Zaartumese culture that does not make much use of pet names, Johanna rarely calls Martel anything other than her name or direct descriptions such as "my girl".   Martel sometimes openly addresses Johanna by her name, an unusually informal behavior even for Micletan standards that surprises other villagers and makes Zaartumese onlookers very uncomfortable, though Johanna does not have anything against it.

Relationship Reasoning

Martel and Johanna's relationship is complicated for that of a parent and a child. While the two understand and love each other deeply as family and Johanna has raised Martel with great care and respect, they have not spent enough time enjoying and bonding together. Johanna, fully aware that she is not a warm and tender person and finding it difficult to overcome her nature at the same time as she struggles to make a living for the two of them, decided that the best she can do to avoid raising her child a hurt person is to keep a small emotional distance. Martel understands this and appreciates how much her mother respects her, though she cannot help feeling distant and finding Johanna an incredibly boring person that she would not usually choose over her friends to spend time together with. The other villagers also share the opinion while Johanna has performed one role of a parent incredibly well, namely raising their child a good and strong person, she has failed to play the other role of a parent of being their child's best friend.   Despite this, Martel and Johanna understand and trust each other, having struggled together and helped each other in many ways wherever they can for many years.

Wealth & Financial state

A villager who started a new life in Brillam after migrating from Zaartum with nothing of value and a baby to raise, Johanna is among the less wealthy residents of the village. However, Johanna's role has changed several times to a more central place in running the inn, and many expect Johanna to move up yet again from her current position as the bookkeeper.
