Pelekys
Walled Citadel of Spartan Discipline
Pelekys is a major, militarized hegemonic polis, most akin to Sparta by way of Mycenae. It controls an important geographical location at the south of the Makrys peninsula, bordering both the Pyrmar to its northwest and the Aspros to its northeast, the continental horn to its west and the distant reaches of the Ieros mainland to its east. This privileged position gives it access to many trade routes, and lets it exert a great deal of control over travel in the region. A massive canal project is underway in an attempt to directly join the Pyrmar and Aspros through Pelekys, which would further increase the polis's reach.
Pelekyte citizens are put through a regimented lifestyle from a young age. Every able-bodied citizen of both genders is drafted into military service for a number of years, and every less-able citizen still serves the state and their military fellows by spending a term working in agriculture, logistics, medicine, or other fields where they can be useful. Where many other poleis consider them to have an unwarranted sense of self-importance and aggression, for their part, Pelekytes view themselves as heroes pacifying the many very real dangers of the wilds. In putting bandits and monsters to the sword, and bringing structure to semi-primitive anarchs barely holding their so-called poleis together with a thin veneer of pretense at civilization, Pelekytes believe they are bringing necessary order to a chaotic world. The Three Faces of War are the most important deities of the polis, which lives and breathes the ideology of endless war.
Expansionist and aggressive, dictator Spathis was the chief instigator of the late Kervelos war, though the leaders of their chief rivals in Xyria and Krypteia also share much blame. He continues his predecessors' policy of trying to take the great Aimafon vale to the west, or at least to continue to keep it out of Xyria's grasp so that no one may claim it, but he no longer commits as many of Pelekys's hoplites to this historical obligation as has long been custom. His eyes instead lie most on Makrys to the north, especially Elaionas and its bountiful plains, and the lands beyond where even now Tykos is being founded.
