The magic is an external field of energy that builds like static until it is molded by something - a stray thought can be enough, though the resulting lack of control is never good
Magic is finite, and can be siphoned in an area with complex magical device that prevents severe surges of uncontrolled magic, but also limits the abilities of spellcasters
Spellcasters are limited only by their own mental fortitude and endurance - maintaining the mental control necessary to produce a predictable and controllable spell effect is arduous, and the flow of magic through the body is a draining experience
The Gods of this world, though most will tell you otherwise, are people who reached such great heights of magical power that they could leave their mortal bodies behind and exist as mortal entities. Worshipers grant them no special power, but make loyal servants among mortals.
Cosmology
The world is a planet in a naturally formed trinary star system, with each star quite far from each other. Most religions have fabricated stories that feature their god or gods as the principle driving force of creation, though some just produce stories either to satisfy their worshipers' questions, or to mock the models put forth by other gods.
Principal Geography & Features
Irion is an earth like world. The area around the Iron Hills is a rough, rolling territory comparable to the Canadian Shield region: heavily forested, with fairly shallow soils leading to patches of exposed bedrock being common, and very rich in a wide variety of metals.
Because of the trinary star system, there are two very bright stars that wander the sky in complex and unpredictable patterns (three body problem). This is primarily of interest in astrology, which is a viable means of divination.
Initial Active Setting
The focus is mainly on the Iron Hills, a border region of the country of Kinilan and recently ravaged by a decades long war with the neighboring country of Chelestra.
