Mole's Peace Military Conflict in Iouran | World Anvil

Mole's Peace

Across the field, we saw the enemy arrayed as we were, ready to let fly. The first volleys of arrows sailed through the sky, and the first found their mark. As the blood from the dead and wounded hit the ground, I felt the earth tremble under my feet, and suddenly a wound appeared in the field between our two armies.

Like many conflicts, the trouble between the small cities of Cuvasvar and Ramig began with a resource dispute. Its end, however, was unprecedented.

The Conflict

Prelude

The slightly overlapping borders of city-states usually matter little, with each side's claim resulting in nothing more than harsh words and sidelong glares. But as soon as a valuable resource is discovered in the disputed territory, things escalate quickly.   The city of Ramig began sending miners into the rolling hills between themselves and Cuvasvar in the year 29. The mayoral council of the latter city immediately protested and claimed mining rights to the precious metals for themselves. The two cities had never been especially friendly with each other. Angry letters were exchanged and propaganda flew thick and fast. Both sent more and more miners into the hills, seeking to stake claims and prevent their rivals from reaping any gains.   Perhaps it was inevitable that violence would break out. When a Ramigian killed a Cuvasvar miner in a scuffle, tempers boiled over. It was not long before war was officially declared (with both cities claiming they had done so first).

Deployment

Each city had in the neighborhood of 3,000 soldiers, arrayed on a broad field among the hills in question.

The Engagement

Only one volley of arrows was fired by each side.

Outcome

Extant reports vary slightly, but all agree on one point: just after hostilities commenced, an enormous sinkhole opened up in a nearly straight line between the two small armies. The generals took one look at the resultant chasm and decided that the gods did not wish them to fight. They met with each other, came to an agreement over a bottle of liquor, and returned home to formally decline to lead their soldiers into battle against the will of the gods. Not having back-up armies, the respective city governments were forced to figure something else out.

Historical Significance

Legacy

The treaty that resulted was the beginning of a prosperous partnership. Cuvasvar and Ramig eventually merged into one metropolis, now called Sid Haja or "Mole's Peace" in ChamanKir.   The small gorge is now considered a holy site. Gherau go there to pray for aid in overcoming minor disagreements that have been blown out of proportion or for forgiveness when a petty dispute has resulted in real damage.
