Ohruk (Oh-ruk)

Basic Information

Anatomy

Tall, powerfully built humanoids with thick black hair and prominent protruding tusks, the Ohruk are an intimidating presence to behold. Even the weakest Ohruk is oftentimes stronger than the average human, meaning that even their mages are a threat in close quarters.

Biological Traits

Within the Ohruk, there are three major subgroups, called the Crag, Stone and River Ohruk. These groups are mostly defined by their skin pigmentation, with the Crag Ohruk possessing light to dark green pigmentation, the Stone having grey pigmentation and the River Ohruk having a light-red pigmentation. Some members of these groups might claim that their different pigmentations show that they are meant for different tasks or posses greater skill, though there is no scientific evidence for this fact. The names of these groups come from where their tribes used to live, with River Ohruk dominating river-valleys, Crag Ohruk thriving in rocky terrain and mountains, while the Stone Ohruk preferred caves and the underground. When the kingdoms of the Ohruk came about, many of these tribes intermingled or were displaced, leading to modern Ohruk-dominant settlements to possess members of all three groups.

Growth Rate & Stages

Much like the Nythrai, the Ohruk mature faster than other spaiens, reaching maturity at the age of twelve, though there does not seem to be an upper limit on their age. Ancient Ohruk of countless hundreds of years have been recorded, though to reach this age one must be truly terrifying in their own skills, or just extraordinarily lucky.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Ohruk adapted to the jungles of Northern Ahuduir, where the thick canopy often prevented any sunlight from penetrating to the forest floor, forcing them to gain better night vision than others. This has a major drawback, however, as the Ohruk find direct sunlight to be painful to their eyes, making life out in the open world painful to just look at.

Civilization and Culture

History

It was the Ohruk whom first founded a permanent settlement, Qidol, and it was the Ohruk who held the tides of the Bloodplague back from northern and north-eastern Ahuduir, preventing the plague from spread to Il'Arthel. Additionally, it was the Ohruk that originally discovered the secrets of copper working in order to better manipulate their jungle homes and, in time, to fight off the hordes of Kalkur.
The late adoption of Bronze by the Ohruk tribes has been credited as one of the final nails in the coffin for the Kalkur, as this new material enabled the Ohruk to better fight their enemies, while also creating sturdier defences against them. Ancient folk tales of the Kordej and Orrdej tell of a holy army of Yemar that, armed with the new bronze armour and weapons, struck out far south, pushing the Kalkur back so hard that the enemy had to snap out of their insanity in order to resist the onslaught. Whatever the truth to this might be, ultimately the lands of the ancient Ohruk were free from these threats, enabling them to turn these new weapons on each other, as warlords began to carve out their own realms.
These petty warlords would have their first real challenge since the Bloodplague when the armies of Koryo would land and conquer their own small colonies. Historians of Koryo would note that this occurred due to the Republic's new initiative to bring all Vanara under one government, and some had established settlements within Ohruk kingdoms. Eventually, when the Republic would fall centuries later, those that had fallen under the yolk were finally free, though seemingly too late to save themselves. Others would continue their struggles even into the centuries of the Empire of the Sun, occasionally trading and clashing with the Empire in skirmishes, though during the War of the Star the tribes of Guzord took advantage of the chaos and annexed some of the north-eastern imperial borderlands, though had to redirect forces to deal with the Theocracy of Chagwen after the Empire called them into the war. Ultimately, when the war ended, Guzord maintained their control over the lands that they had taken, though they were significantly weakened after fight a two-front war.
When the Long Summer came to Ahuduir, it was the Ohruk kingdoms that fell first out of all the nations, as compounding catastrophes left them unable to respond to any threats. With the Jungles rapidly dying and being replaced by dry grasslands, many Ohruk fled into the still lush mountains or, like the Qivdaram, would flee underground. Others still fled East to Il'Arthel, chased by old enemies across the straits, though some chose to stay and fight on the coasts. Why they did this is not entirely known, though the Legend known as Ordej or Grand Sentinel, would be born out of this time, as a lone Ohruk archer held off an army while their kin fled across the strait. What is known, however, is that those who survived the assaults thrown against them would rebuild as coastal settlements, thriving off of the various fish and new grains that they could acquire.
In time these coastal settlements would give rise to the Kalbrol Empire, one of the largest nations of the Long Summer, as it dominated the eastern straits on both sides and commanded a great fleet with which they patrolled the seas. This domination was only ended when the Qivdaram returned from their centuries of exile, bringing a great war to the surface, and the Kalbrol Empire. Unlike most other nations on the continent of Ahuduir, the Empire did not rely on Adventurers too heavily, though their own internal struggles had long since prevented them from expanding, playing into the Long Peace. With a new enemy to unite against, the peoples of Kalbrol fought with a fervor that would only be matched when the Qivdaram would reach Kharahal, drawing out the conflict for a few additional years. Ultimately, when the Qivdaram became overstretched, armies from all sides would throttle them back to the old territories of the Guzord, though the Kalbrol Empire would shatter in doing so, leaving them with only a small stretch of coastline.
During the Long Summer, other Ohruk would flee to the lands of Eastern Orhindur, where they would meld their various cultures with that of the Klarth Thjan, and become known as the Rhonnonr. In time, however, this name would also represent the Half-Thjan and Half-Ohruk people born out of new unions, a tall, hardy people capable of easily surviving the difficult times all now lived in. These Rhonnonr would build themselves their own nations on Eastern Orhindur, trade with the Ashlanders to their East and become master merchants and marines, selling their services to those who could afford it.
