Maram, the Rebel

Maram bint Sobia (a.k.a. Mary / May / Mimi)

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Pretty thin, not super tall. Petite.

Body Features

Tanned, with dark brown hair. Her hair is a little bit wispy, not the healthiest looking hair. To combat this, she wears it in a low bun, and throws a scarf around her hair - not pinned down, kinda like a hood, and sometimes it falls to her shoulders. She's tried fixing her hair - used many different oils, etc. Even asked her sister, Alya, for advice since she's so good with plants. But no luck. She's doomed to have limp hair. At least it isn't frizzy like her sisters. Though her other sister's hair is truly enviable. Apparently it's 'all natural!'

Facial Features

Oval face, circle eyes, always looking for answers. Small nose, soft brows, small forehead, and circular chin, with small but full lips. Her sister is all edges, Maram is softer, easier on the eye. You kinda want to put her in your pocket. Her face doesn't match her personality. It's a shock to people.

Identifying Characteristics

Always wears golden earrings, that hang down, almost level with her chin. They're a remnant of her other life. Her mother had bought them for her before everything went down, telling her that she would grow into them. And Maram did.

Physical quirks

Left-handed, rolls her eyes a lot. That's similar to her sister. Walks with purpose. Shoulders back. Always proud. Licks her lips often.

Apparel & Accessories

She wears 3/4 pants with filigree patterns along the hens, and a wrap around long qamis on top. There are different layers of and colours of fabric in her outfit. She wears a band around her middle to keep it together, as well as for a place to hang her wares. Her shoes are leather, sometimes flat sandals, but mostly short boots. The clothes she wears aren't top quality. They don't have very much money to always be changing outfits, plus the villages get very dusty, and she spends lots of time at the Rebel Base. The scarf she throws over her head and shoulders is usually a block colour, and thin cotton. Not meant for much except to give her hair a bit more volume. Sometimes she wears a bandana instead, though only if her hair is hanging down.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Maram lives with her parents, two sisters, and brother in al-Faqir. She was born into wealth, however, so her current situation isn't ideal. Or it wasn't. Until she met Jad, the Bastard, and he showed her a whole new world. Now, she doesn't much care about wealth, only that the truth is revealed. Though, tbh, she's not sure she would've cared much if she were still rich. Maybe part of her is doing all this to get her life back.

Education

She was 11 when her parents were stripped of everything, so she had finished primary school. The next few years, as the family relocated, they were in desolation and despair. Because all her friends from her school in al-Madina went on to high school there, she didn't care about continuing in the village schoolhouse. She didn't actually care about school anyway. She didn't need to, because her parents were rich, so she would never have to work anyway. And then everything changed, and she hadn't paid enough attention at school, and was no way going to the village universities - which was more a kind of internship set-up, and would give her no chance to get a high-paying career. So she didn't do any further studies. Her parents didn't care much about her continuing school, and in the villages, it wasn't compulsory for a kid to go to school - because some couldn't afford it anyway. When her parents heard that, they quickly enrolled her, making sure nobody thought they couldn't afford something. So she was forced to be in school, but then she left soon as she could, and stayed a bit miserable for a few years later.

Employment

In the beginning, she never lowered herself to even think about having to work. Her brother and father found jobs in the fields and factories, but she and her sister couldn't face a working day. Her mother had just given birth to Alya, the Badass, and was even more in despair than the rest of them. So Maram never got a job. She just couldn't do it. She and her sister moped around the house, looking at all their fine things that they had been allowed to keep, went to walk around al-Madina (though that was too expensive to do more than once a month). She realises now that it was a terrible way to be - so down and wallowing in pity, instead of going out and making the best of things. But luckily the rebellion found her before she completely wasted away.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Getting into the rebellion was a pretty awesome feeling! Also the way she exposed Had - that felt bloody awesome. What a bastard, he is.

Failures & Embarrassments

Facing her friends to tell them she was moving out of al-Ghani was the most embarrassing moment of her life. Even though she was young, she still felt the humiliation. Her friends were all rich af, and the fact that she had to go live in the dusty villages just made her burn with shame. Especially since her father was accused of stealing the malik's wealth. That spread like a disease.

Mental Trauma

That embarrassment never went away, and she even held a grudge against her father, though he tried to assure her it wasn't true. Why wouldn't it be true? He ruined everything. So she kinda doesn't like her dad. He's always working so they never really see him anyway. So, the fact that they went from having everything, to having nothing - that affected her a lot.

Intellectual Characteristics

Her path in life has made her a very snarky person. She's always ready with a line to take someone down a peg, to belittle someone. She's a bit mean, tough. She doesn't coddle people. If someone wrongs her, she'll raise hell to get back at them. She's angry, and entitled. Though she didn't do any further studies, she is usually a logical person. However, her vengeance gets in the way of logic sometimes. "Hell hath no fury" etc. When she sees red, she needs to act. She has no patience, and doesn't hold grudges. Doesn't wait it out - seeks vengeance as soon as she can, in whatever way she can.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

To get back to the life she was living before that malik came into the picture. She's so angry, especially because she can't do what she normally does and just yell at him right away. Her patience is waring thin.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

She isn't great at puzzles and riddles. Has no patience for them. Can't cook to save a life. She's good at fooling people. Her sweet face is useful in getting people to confess things, or to get them where she wants them. She's a good actor.

Likes & Dislikes

When people stop in the middle of a path. That kills her. She enjoys a good party. Though, before the rebels, she had no friends in her village, so it was ages before she got invited to another party. Her parents and sister and brother still wallow in self-pity but, once she makes friends of the rebels, she goes to their parties, becomes less obnoxious and proud. Especially since meeting Isir, the Magnificent. If we're being honest, she kind of admires Isir. And maybe her clothes kinda mimic her a bit. Oh, also she hates Jad. Also hates staying at home. Because it's depressing. She understands why Alya's always out.

Virtues & Personality perks

Quick to act, spontaneous. Knows what she wants, and who she is.

Vices & Personality flaws

Impulsive. Doesn't think things through. Stubborn in her beliefs. Can't say sorry.

Personality Quirks

Snorts when laughing. People find it endearing. She hates it. But she uses it to her advantage. Drinks three cups of qahwa a day - small cups, but always three.

Hygiene

Regular hygiene. She used to really take her time in the bath. Unfortunately, situations have changed. She likes to take care of herself, and does as much as she can, but her bathroom isn't that magnificent. She often stays at Isir's house, though, and her bathroom is epic. Maram isn’t super neat. Her room - which she shares with her two sisters - is a mess. but that’s both her sisters’ fault too.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Isir, the Magnificent is her best friend. They met in the Rebel base, and hit it off instantly. They both have fire inside them. Also they share an addiction to coffee. Jad, the Bastard is someone she thought herself to be in love with. That fell a part hard, when she found out he was engaged, and never bothered to tell her. Jerk-off. So she hates him. Zein, the Leader is someone she admires above all. He isn't much older than she is, but she sees him as a father figure, since her own dad kinda sucks. Also, Saif - her newest crush. He’s beautiful, and calm, and gives her butterflies. We’re not sure it’s a good match. But it’s her lesson to learn.

Family Ties

Alya, the Badass is her sister, but they don't really have a relationship. They were born ten years a part, and Alya was a child when they were all rotting in their despair. And now, Alya is never home. Nour is her elder sister, Bilal is her elder brother. She and Nour have a great relationship, but she doesn't see Bilal much, as he's always working. Even though she does love Nour lots, and they’re very close, she hasn’t invited her to the rebellion. She kinda likes it being her own thing.

Social Aptitude

Coy. Or apparently coy. Her face looks like she would be coy. But the world has taught her not to be. So people are shocked to hear her arguing and yelling. She looks lovely, but she’s actually feisty. Sardonic, sarcastic. Not very educated but her sass comes naturally. She’s very confident, though can get a bit ‘actually’ coy around people she admires and respects. She can be polite and has manners. She was brought up in wealth after all. But if you wanna throw down, she’s ready.

Mannerisms

Likes looking up to the sky when exasperated. Clenches her fists when angry. Her right eye has a bit of a twitch when she’s mad. People can see it. They know to back off, unless they want to be argued to hell and back.

Hobbies & Pets

Enjoys makeup and jewellery and finery. Having Isir as a friend is useful in that. But she isn’t using her. She has no pets, doesn’t really like animals - they smell and are dirty. She reads a fair bit. She has pride and doesn’t like sounding dumb, so since she didn’t go to University, she reads as much as she can. Improves her vocabulary.

Speech

Soft voice but she can use it to wound. Her language is flowery, she speaks in metaphors, and sometimes goes on rants, if she’s really impassioned. She insults but in a way that the person doesn’t even realise it. Says Ha! lots because people shock her with their stupidity sometimes.

Wealth & Financial state

Not very wealthy. She doesn't have her own job. Because she has no skills, but also because she's so busy with the rebellion. Her father works hard, and they survive, and can sometimes indulge. But they're very much at the lower end of middle-class.
