Zein, the Leader

Zein ibn Yad

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

He's pretty skinny. Doesn't eat much, or train much. All his thoughts are on the rebellion, which is sad because nothing seems to be happening. No, not true. They get new members every day.

Body Features

Light brown, kinda leathery skin, since he basically lives underground.

Facial Features

Scratchy beard, long nose, inquisitive eyes, always searching, looking around corners, can see inside your soul.

Identifying Characteristics

His blistered/gloved hand. Sometimes he takes the glove off to let his hand breathe. It isn't a pretty sight, but the other rebels respect him for what he did.

Physical quirks

Right-handed, forced to be left-handed since his accident. Constantly fixes his glove, adjusts it. His posture is rigid, he's always thinking, never relaxed. He walks with purpose.

Apparel & Accessories

Shirwal and thin qamis. Nothing fancy at all. Doesn't really have a job. He's a recluse, because the malik will recognise him if he were to show his face close to al-Madina or al-Qasr. He was prominent in the rebellion scene, even before he disguised himself and stole the map and compass. So his clothes are a bit shabby, and thin, but he doesn't care much.

Specialized Equipment

Nothing, save his exemplary speaking skills. Oh, and Basil's Map & Compass and Kitab al-Sahar - and okay, a tiny bit of magic that can't really do anything, but serves as a reminder that it is real, that they haven't all just imagined it.

Mental characteristics

Education

He's a smart guy, but wasn't really into academics. Besides, his family was pretty poor, and also the rebellion swallowed him up and never spit him back out. So, he doesn't have much of an education.

Accomplishments & Achievements

His most impressive accomplishment is the way he disguised himself to enter into al-Qasr, so he could steal the map and compass of Basil al-Azim. Sure, it did burn the hell out of his right hand - the compass did - but it was worth it, because it woke him up after he was given al-Ilaj.

Failures & Embarrassments

He considers being forced to take al-Ilaj as a failure, and an embarrassment. He was so into the rebellion and never thought they'd catch him. But they did, and he wasted five years of his life under the spell, when he could've used that time to overthrow the malik and his cruel regime.

Mental Trauma

He has a terribly blistered right hand, because he ran for many km holding onto Basil's compass when he was younger. He wears a leather glove, so as to avoid hitting it anywhere and causing himself any pain. But it is a great reminder of what he did, and why they are all there.

Intellectual Characteristics

He's a very quick guy, can run really fast. Not a great fighter, since he has a bad hand. Can't handle a weapon, since he's right-handed. Though he has become a lot more deft at using his left-hand since the incident. He doesn't do much physical fighting anymore anyway. He is a great orator. He can inspire the other rebels with his words.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

To overthrow the malik, and destroy the lies his palace is built on, and bring salvation, and freedom back to the world.

Likes & Dislikes

One thing he really likes that nobody really understands is flowers. He always enjoys when people bring flowers down to the Rebel Base. Makes him smile. Reminds him of magic.

Virtues & Personality perks

Extremely patient. Scarily patient. He can wait years. Don't hold your breath. He's also very virtuous and righteous. Totally lawful good. He will do what's right, no matter what. Give the people freedom, even if they don't ask for it. Because it's the right thing to do.

Vices & Personality flaws

Ok, maybe he's too righteous. You gotta ask people what they want sometimes, Zein. But he thinks that most people don't know what they want. He can also hold a grudge like he's holding a feather at his side. Doesn't weigh him down, don't blacken his heart. His intentions remain pure. But once he hates you, he hates you for good.

Personality Quirks

He's a little bit tired. Probably because he's always thinking, never eats, and rarely sees the sun. So he often looks a bit vague, and will blink a few times before replying to someone. People know to stand silent before him if they've asked a question, so he can turn it over in his head awhile, so he can give the correct and considered response.

Hygiene

Not exactly ideal. Bit dusty, grubby. Shaves only when his beard is longer than his index finger, and not much. He kinda looks like a beggar man, but his voice is commanding enough to remind people who he is. His clothes aren't filthy or riddled with holes, but they're a bit baggy, and a little wrinkled.

Social

Contacts & Relations

All the rebels. They are his family.

Social Aptitude

Polite, kind, good listener. He's a model citizen. Seriously, he's just so good. What a good guy. Maybe too good?

Mannerisms

He gestures with his hands, so as to capture an audience, even when he's just speaking to one person. He touches his glove absently, a lot. Scratches his beard.

Hobbies & Pets

Rebellion is his life. But he enjoys smelling the flowers. He likes stories, too - not fictional stories. They have story night, once a week. And he sits them all down and tells them stories of old.

Speech

Has a clear voice, enunciates words perfectly. Great orator. Almost malik-like, really. Says 'before al-Ilaj' a lot. Curses the malik - never refers to him by name or official title. Just curses, sometimes ones that make no sense - "that pigeon foot" or "the dumb door."
