Adept

Adepts, the unseen cogs in the Larani. The empire spreads its dark shadow over the Rift, brutally and efficiently subjugating all around it, and falling short at actual governance. But who drives them? What powers their engines, sorts their files, and suffers for the glory of the Impirator? The Adepts. The Prophets of the Lati speak to the masses and spread the empires propaganda. They power the engines and pilot the ships, powering the endless war machine. Long-suffering and never-ending, ten Adepts for one Lati, the cogs in the machine toil on, unrecognized.

Appointment

An Adept is an Inkallu who wasn't capable of becoming Lati, but who was too powerful to simply kill and be rid of. They are removed from training by the overseers and placed as Adepts, the machinery of Laran.

Responsibilities

The Adepts are seen by many Lati as simply slaves who are Inkallu. They channel the Kali Energy required to make the machines work, they act as elite soldiers for the Larani military, they are the cogs of the Larani macbhine.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

An Adept is a lifetime position. On very rare occasions an Adept will be raised from their servitude, but it happens as often as a sunny day on Nafok. An Adept can't be demoted because what rung is lower than not being on the ladder at all?

History

In the early KRD, when the Makassi of Otanli were busy eradicating those who raised them from their "savagery", they realised fairly quickly that all their technology ran on Kali Energy, ship engines, Crysalis communicators, all of it. As such, they decided to stop murdering every Inkallu who did not pass Lati standards, and instead reduced them to a servant class. They were to do all the menial work required for a civilization to function, which Lati were either too sparse or too "noble" to do. This role has continued to the modern day, slightly expanding to allow Adepts to serve as soldiers, rather than engineers.

Cultural Significance

Despite being Inkallu, Adepts are viewed very poorly by Lati. THe more dismissive or contemptuos will see them as naught more than extra valuable slaves, the Inkallu superemecists will see them as barely better than Lerin, and the less judgemental will see them about as valuable as a competent mid-level officer. Difficutl to replace, useful in many ways, but not particularly worthy of much honors or praise. The more religious of the Lerin however, see them as prophets, the emmisaries of the Lati to the common people. As such, Adepts are often found serving as clergy for the many Lati temples around, preaching the Inkallu supremacy which Laran relies on to the masses.
