A Leader For the City

As the city council was being founded in 1907, there was still a large appeal for a central leader system. As a compromise, the mayor was established as a tie-breaker for legislation, and as the enforcement head. The mayor is also the face of the city when dealing with the Ponturan Order. The mayor has various other powers they can exercise, such as calling emergency council sessions or veto power, but generally mayors have limited their use to extraneous circumstances.

Election Process

Like council seats, the mayor is decided by public vote. The mayor serves a four year term, and before 1918 there was no term limit; in 1918, the council passed the Chusett Better Representation Bill, which limited any mayor to a maximum of four terms, for a total of 16 years. The election happens three months before the end of the current mayor's last term, January 31, and the period following is a transition period where new staff for the office can be assigned by the incoming mayor, although often only one or two positions are changed.

Election Season

Around one year before the election, it is common for mayor potentials to start campaigning. These early campaigns usually consist of seeing how much support one can garner for themselves to see if running a full campaign is worth the effort. Most hopefuls drop from the race halfway through the year and show their support for another candidate. The last six months, while tense, are usually civil but there have been a few elections that have devolved to baseless criticisms, often after a controversial decision by the current mayor.
