The Helpless Crew of the Shadow

The creaking of the ship is the first thing I hear. Then I feel pain. It's like someone stabbed me in the eyes. I sit up, dizzy and disoriented. What happened?   "Gymmi?" There's no answer from my first mate. I open my eyes. Blackness. What? Even at night I have good vision. I hold my hand up. I can't see. "Gymmi! Gymmi!"   I stagger to my feet, panicked. Still nothing. The shock starts to fade away and I remember. The rigging had come to life, wrapping round my crews necks, hoisting them up and hanging them from the masts.   "Gymmi!" I scream. My friend, my dearest friend. Tears fall down my face. What have I done?   "Gymmi." The voice is sickly sweet. I turn and see her. Blackness is all around, except her. She made sure I could still see her. "Must you cry like fucking baby? You're getting what you wanted. He's still with you. They're all still with you. I wouldn't deprive you of your crew. We still have need of them."   I pull my pistol and shoot at her. The bullets go straight through her. She smiles, her eyes glowing with power. She walks towards me, making me shiver. I back away, the wheel digging into me as I slam into it. Her hands press against my chest, making me shutter.   "Thank you for agreeing to my deal. You're going to make a wonderful Herald. My beautiful Herald. We're going to work so well together." Then she's gone, and complete blackness returns. My entire body's trembling. My legs give out and I collaspe to the deck. I can't breathe. What did I do? What did I do?!   "Captain?" My blood runs cold.   "Gymmi?" Hands rest on my shoulders.   "Captain, what happened? The crew and I, we don't feel right." I can feel him moving awkwardly. "Captain, the last thing I remember is the rigging hanging me. I remember hearing my neck snap. There's no survivng that. What acursed thing has happened to do this?"   "They were right." I sob. "They were right. We shouldn't have come after the Shadow. I'm so sorry. I've cursed you all."   "Captain, we chose to follow you here." I get to my feet, looking out towards where the rest of my crew would be. "I have to say, you do look mightly different. Terrifyingly so."   "What do I look like?"   "Perfect. Beautiful and handsome at the same time. Impossibly flawless skin, hair that's almost alive with it's fire-red color. The only possible imperfection would be the grey sheen over your eyes but that somehow doesn't dimish any of it. You're also smaller, younger, like your aging has been undone."   I feel like the bottom of my stomach has fallen out. Oh, Eternals. There's no saving us. We're completely entangled.   "Captain? Wha.."   "Herald." I whiper, an overwhelming feeling of helplessness overcoming me. My legs buckle. "She's made me her Herald."   Eternals, what have I done?
