The Queer Resistance

An organised group of LGBTQ+ people, feminists and allies, fighting against the oppressive regime that forces them to hide or be less than they could.

Structure

Members are organised into localised cells that act according to local needs. Each cell is autonomous and without hierarchy, with 'leaders' being assigned for periods of a few months and then changed. Cells communicate online in hidden chat rooms behind metres of encryption and code. As a rule, the members of one cell do not know who the members of other cells are.

To overthrow the oppressive government and restore human rights to women and queer people.

History

The group was founded by lesbian couple Tori Dirham and Isla Thornton on the 100th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. The two were hackers with access to the Outside Web and read queer and feminist theory and history. They found other sympathetic people through illicit, encrypted chat rooms, and regularly uploaded banned material to the Web so it could find its way into the right hands. They managed to remain under the radar for five years before the government got wind of their existence, but efforts to isolate and take down the resistance were futile, due to the group's structure and organisation. Through a network of hackers and spies, the resistance was able to discover other potential resistance groups and, after vetting them thoroughly, contact them and invite them to join their larger organisation. By 2079, they had spread across most of England and Wales, though they were still small.
Disaster struck in 2082, when the authorities managed to infiltrate several cells at once. Hundreds of activists were imprisoned, some executed. This set the movement back considerably and they were forced to cease activism for quite some time. The good news was that the authorities now believed that they had taken out the entire movement. This gave the resistance time to rebuild, replenish their numbers, establish new cells, and recruit new allies. People realised that they had been thinking too small, and efforts were made to swing politicians and raise up their own political candidates, in hopes that, when they strike, they will have enough people in power to support them.
