History

The ritual started as a way to know when a dragon child was ready to take on the responsibility and magic of an adult.  It evolved into a way to know when a dragon was ready to leave a flight and become part of the greater world through shape shifting into other races/species.  Now, it is a way for the last dragons to know that the few actual dragon children will be safe in a world that has caused them to almost become extinct, to the point that they have blended their DNA with other species to save their racial knowledge.

Execution

Each dragon must live for a year on their own, shape shifted into another race.  They can't get any help from another dragon, though their will be dragons watching them.  The Watchers will only interfere if the secret that they are a dragon is about to be exposed, otherwise the dragon is left on its own.  After the year is up, the dragon return to the flight and the Watchers recount their trials, tribulations, and triumphs.

Components and tools

Each dragon is equipped with an adventures backpack and basic tools need to make it to a city or town.  They are given the clothes, tools, and coin needed to make it for a month.  They will need to use the equipment they are given, the knowledge they have, and the skills they have learned to make it on their own for a year.

Observance

The ritual begins on the summer solstices after the dragon reaches the age of majority.  If considered successful, the dragon is considered an adult.  If not, then the dragon is considered a child for another 10 years and will have to try the ritual again.
