Shasem

The kingdom of Shasem was ruled by the Crotamis family for the last few hundred years, but when the king was assassinated a few years ago, the country fell into chaos. Individual cities and city-states have tried to make sense of the chaos, but each of the 17 claims to the throne is at war with the others, demanding their claim is better than the others. Many of the cities of this sea-faring people have fallen completely into anarchy while others are strongholds of the Heirs.

Demographics

Citizens are primarily human, some elves and aquatic races. Servants, slaves, foreigners, and other non-citizens are human, elf, tiefling, orc, few small races except for the occasional gnome crafter, found more often in cities bordering Actu.

History

Shasem was largely uninhabited on the surface before the Liakos people arrived from Omphalos. They and other seafarers set up harbors that grew into cities around the coast of Shasem. They lived as a loosely allied but independent set of city-states until a cruel human named Crotamis conquered them and united them all under his banner.   The Crotamis family ruled for hundreds of years until recently when the royal family was assassinated. The country fell apart. Many of the city-states reverted back to independence with varying levels of success. There are 17 people from politicians to generals to merchants and blood-kin who are all claiming right to the throne.

Geography

With a largely mountainous interior, the edges of the country are the most hospitable. The seas are relatively calm and harbors are generous. There are a number of protected harbors and bays as well as islands of many shapes and sizes dotting the surrounding sea.   All of this means that travel between city-states is easiest and fastest via ship rather than overland.
