Nordby

The city started as a trade outpost under the rule of the merchants guild. But was at a later time transferred to the crown. And traditionally ruled by the Baron Of The North. After the fall of Faratish. The Baron has named himself; King of the North. The city has been fortified numerous times; both against attacks from the sea and land. Infrastructure

Districts

The city of Nordby has a rather large footprint with the following districts:

Harbour

The bay of Whales offers a great natural harbour, and with some engineering the harbour is now defendable and very well protected. The harbour area is divided into to two sections; the old harbour and the docks. The docks being the new addition to the area. Stretching some 250 feet from land and out. The twin docks are T-shaped and are one of the areas that generates the best income for the city. The old harbour area is constructed from stone and mortar. Dating back to the original settlement.

Market squares

There are 4 different markets in Nordby. All having their own distinct type of traders, save the "Traders Corner" being a mix of everything. As Nordby is the last part of civilization most traders stop here either on their way further north for trading with the Umli or on their way south for the winter trying to maximise their income on their trade routes.

Fish Market

Closest to the docks. Selling, you guessed it, fish. In earlier days this was the whale market; but after the the decline of the whale population and the natural decline in the whale trade; The market has over time become flooded with other types of fish.

Meat Market

The meat market is located close to the west gate with easy access to the fields outside the city wall. The name meat market has stuck to this place since the creation of the city. In its present form it is more of a mixed farmers market. The sale of both meat and vegetables, and other farm products. The area around the market is often referred to as "Farmers Town".

Pelt Market

The pelt market is located further north, close to the north gate. One of the more exotic locations in Nordby. The Umli traders are known for their pelt and furs. Their stalls are by many considered to be a piece of art by themselves. Many locals call this part of the city for "Umli Town".

"Traders Corner"

Many a new visitor have gotten lost in the maze of stalls, shops and inns. During summer this part of the city never sleeps. In the wintertime it is still pretty crowded unlike the other markets that usually shrink to under a tenth of their summer size. Central market in the city. Also has a lot of stores, inns and brothels. This is often referred to as the market square. Being the largest of the trade centres.

The Hill

The hill is the elevated area where the castle and keep are located. The hill has a fantastic view of the old harbour. And from the vantage point you can see as far as the light towers.

Castle

The castle area contains the mansions of the richer people in Nordby and most of the guild headquarters. Unlike the city; the castle area has cobblestone streets, with frequent light poles. Most buildings have their own private garden.

Ice Fountain

The fountain is the centrepiece of the outer courtyard. And ancient fountain permanently frozen.

Inner Keep

Traditionally the keep of the baron of the north, now; king of the north. The keep is built in the old Faratish fashion. Squared with four towers.
