Spellstone
Spellstone is a mineral found around Waystones and Leylines that is used to channel, enhance and create magic. The stones are very fragile and when broken can cause bursts of wild magic. In actuality, Spellstone is forged from the essence of the Primordials, a gradual leak or vent of their power in order to stop them from gathering enough damage energy to break free.
This energy pulls outwards from the Places of Power along Leylines that infuses the rocks around with the magic that is known as Spellstone. When these lines cross, they form Waystones, conduits that act as anchor points for magic, enhancing the natural capacity of magic users and powers of creatures formed from that power. Some speak of a hidden portal system that once was the transport system of the Elf Empire that is intrinsically linked to these Waystones. Sorcerers are often conceived near Leylines or Waystones. The formation of new Spellstone is slow and takes years, with supplies dwindling.
In liquid form, Spellstone is used to create spell-like potions, and elixirs that can enhance magic powers for short times. To do this, Spellstone must be superheated and will recrystalise when cooled, almost instantly.
The Wells (Deepwell and Longwell) are the primary sources of Spellstone in The Nation of Ameril, although Deepwell is all but mined out, and Longwell's source is predominately from the Shimmerlake.
Rifted Spellstone is now being collected from the Glass Ocean where broken pieces and artifacts are collected from the Spellstorm of the Waning Rift. This Spellstone appear to be more volatile with greater powerful, but the exact differences are unknown.
Spellstorms or Spellrifts are areas of great magical destructive power, often created from the destruction of a Waystone or magical battle. The most famous being the centre of the Stormborn Sea, where the Elves rent up the Waning Rift where they now live. Another area of note is Shardfell in Northcrest
Wildly addictive; those that succumb to the allure of Spellstone become what are known as a Vampire, seeking to drain others of their innate spellcasting ability, and eventually becoming former husks of themselves. Dragonborn tend to horde Spellstone, as they gain more, their intellect and powers grow.
