Elf

An Elf, sometimes known as the Fey or by the slang 'Eaters' by other races, appear reclusive and un-emotive to outsiders. Able to recall memories and gain experiences by eating the recently dead, the majority live on floating Islands built on the remains of the Waning Rift.   Appearance They move with a halting sharp steps which belies their grace upon the battlefield and dexterous abilities. Each movement is done with precision and intent and their strange flow makes even a covered figure stand out against the more populous humans. This is otherworldly and unsettling to most. Elves are often stoic or sombre, their emotions clad and although they express the same range that humans do it is often much harder to tell. Much is conveyed through slight movements in the body or face, some saying human emotions are simply the extreme representation of what elves show. Analytical and reserved, most elves take their time to consider options and rarely jump into action without thought.   Physically, elves are completely hairless and grey skinned, almost translucent under bright light. Their facial features include  slit nostrils, and combined with sharp canine teeth and a secondary inner mouth designed to pry open skulls and consume brains many find looking too closely at elves terrifying. Elves are exclusively carnivorous.    History At their most powerful they fought against the Dragons, holding their territories with powerful magics and skilled battle prowess. Blindsided by the events of The Fall many of the Elves staged a fighting retreat, precious few staying to fight the Blight. The others, worked together to upend a Place of Power now known as the Waning Rift to create a group of floating islands now known as the Tradewind Isles, or in their tongue Nilvalian.   Current Politics In present times, the elves move to secure Places of Power believing that if they are able to awaken one of the Primordials who have the power of creation and are immune to The Blight that they may save the world from the power of The Unmaker. Those elves who leave the isles are either traders, diplomats or adventurers, seeking magical remnants or hoping to reclaim sites that are lost. Treated with some degree of wariness, for many know of the elves predilection for cannibalism, fewer are aware that they do not kill for food. Other elves, having shunned their society lurk off the beaten track, either keeping to themselves for reasons only known to them, or, as some say, preying on folk who enter the woods alone. Most elves are loyal to their race to a fault and discussing their homeland or their motivation is tantamount to treason.   Their population remains small, thanks to the lengthy reproduction cycle they have; maternity taking over 3 years before an elven infant is ready to be born. In addition to this, the after effects of The Fall have had a dramatic impact on the amount of stillborns and deaths before birth.   In current time most Elves hoard their magical artifacts atop their floating islands, and trade with those that live on coastal cities, passing over many of the significant trade ports for that which they cannot acquire through magical means. Visitors to the islands are rare, although not unheard of and claims of great riches and magical towers have been passed on to those who want to listen, and the elves, for the most part have done nothing to stop the spread of these rumours.   Ghouls Perhaps the most terrifying trait of elves is their custom to eat the dead. Their own or any others. With the consummation of the bodies they believe they are continuing the natural way of life and once consumed they are able to gleam memories or traits of those they eat. Although slight, the effects can be used to great effect and great warriors or mages are often eaten by those who seek their power.   A Ghoul is an Elf who has eaten the brains of too many creatures (or often even a singular creature infected by The Blight) and has lost their sense of identity reverting to a more feral state. Ghouls can be reasoned with, but they are aggressive and liable to only respond to short term rewards. Sometimes several Ghouls group together in packs, but are often solitary creatures.   Most Ghouls have deathly white skin and claw like fingernails, their teeth becoming elongated and canine as the descend further into their madness. When their skulls are cut open, ghoul’s brains appear shrivelled up. This is likely due to changes wrought by the changes during their transformation. As a ghoul consume more and more brains, their skills and powers deepen, making them stronger and faster and if they survive long enough, they begin to develop stranger wiles. More than one ghoul has been found, dressed in rags in broad daylight, ready to grab easy prey and pull them into a darkened alley.   Names Elves have complex names referring to the skills and abilities they have gained, extending each time they consume a dead elf as they take on their mantle. To be more accessible to humans they often have a simplistic nick name, mentioned after a noun or verb, e.g "Swan" or "Glean"
