It is widely recognized that the abundant harvests that come from the sea should be the primary resource and most popular product for the area. Iheya is one of over 150 islands in a chain that spans an environment of weather that can only be called tropical. The culture here is insular and not very diverse with many traditions and ceremonies foreign to those of surrounding and more well known cultures. Being a small island, you would imagine there isn't much farming or commerce that occurs, but you would be sorely remiss.
Iheya has not only a robust rice trade, but also trades well in sugarcane and pineapple, which leads to spirits that are popular with many who come to visit, especially those of the kingdom's royalty.
In fact, so many of the agricultural products are so popular, that the Ward of Ramosa over time has grown jealous of the other organizations on the island and have sought ways to influence their trade over that of others. The Ward has taken a 'ours or none' mindset and have recently gone to some underhanded tactics to influence their products over others. I mean, who doesn't like pickled fish...
One of the mages for the Ward recently went out to "review" the pineapple crops, and in their wake left behind several wards to encourage root rot within the fields (they also caused a infiltration of sea water into the rice fields, but that was so masterfully done that even some of the members of the Ward don't believe it's mage was actually responsible and it wasn't just "nature doing their thing". The mage, of course, took offense...
The Pineapple Scourge of Toshi1012 backfired as the price of pineapples didn't go up due to scarcity, it actually spawned another competitor. The royalty had purchased nearly the entire pineapple harvest for the year. However, during the customary first sampling of the harvest, which was meant to be presented to the queen during a birthday ceremony honoring the princess, a disturbing discovery was made. The first pineapple that was cut open during the ceremony revealed a distressing infestation of worms, which promptly caused a commotion among the guests in attendance. It only got progressively worse when the third pineapple was sliced and contained even more worms. Needless to say, the pineapple crop was rejected by the royal court and the prices were bid so low the harvest went back to the island locals. When sampled and shared among the locals however, noting but delicious golden flesh was experienced, and as was customary, they shared with those from other lands who came to visit the island and spend time on its beaches. Another outcome was from Bartender Massan who created the most wonderfully delightful pineapple awamori. Royalty went nuts over this product and the Ward was not only thwarted again, but Bartender Massan began his own guild that became known as the Ward of Black Koji.
Time after time the Ward of Ramose tried to elevate their products, and each time their plans either backfired or were unproductive with nothing happening to the other group or industry they were trying to bring down. Mikanshikan, the Ward's recently hired mage, presented a new idea to bring shame to all the Wards during the next Harvest Festival and being desperate to show their products should be considered the best, the greedy members on the Ward of Ramosa agreed to his plan.
The Ward of Ramosa supported the mage who figured their best bet would be to attempt something during the annual harvest festival, known locally as known as Umi no Miyako no Sekku. They would try to sabotage everyone, while their product would remain untouched and pure, elevating their product above all others present. This would cause the victors to become enthralled with their products and services and elevate their riches beyond their imaginations.
Normally during the Harvest Festival the weather is turning mild and everything is plentiful. But the Toshi1013 Harvest Festival, was unique as strange weather was brewing off the coast to the southeast and as the stars aligned properly, the island residents were expecting to have Inarai visit during the entire festival.
Not only did she visit, but she left heartbroken, and the islands devastation quickly ensued.
I wouldn't say the Ward of Ramosa was directly responsible for the demon gate opening during the festival, but the Tosji1013 Kumaya Cave Incident could have only been started with the alignment of greed, jealousy, and some misplaced, mispronounced magical incantations.
