Tech-Comm Box

Throughout various locations around the Islands, you will encounter a tall metallic box in the middle of nowhere. most of these boxes are weathered and may look like a relic form the past and that they don't do anything, but they are in fact used for interisland communications.   These communication boxes are a combination of recovered tech from outside the veil that works within the veil, and magics. There are no seen aerial wires and when you pop one open, the insides are not only confusing, you eventually find yourself waking up somewhere unexpected. If you're a hooligan teenager, its usually in your room safely at home with your parent standing over you holding a wooden spoon at the ready waiting for you to say something smart....
Before the Tech-Comm Boxes, signal fires were used. These were once extremely reliable forms of communication in their final evolution, but the communication error known as the Alien Invasion Incident of Toshi14 led to the invention of the new system by the Mage Guild.   The known components of the Tech-Comm boxes include various proprietary components that only the Mage Guild has privy to, but basically its "full of a bunch of wires and crap, and anywhere from one to up to three or more magical stones". These magical stones are sometimes referred to as Ioun Stones.   Through a combination of technology and magic, the Tech-Comm boxes allow any user to walk up to the box and speak to anyone on another island. There are a few things though, like the other person has to be at the receiving box, you have to know their number, and messages aren't always saved or the bulb burns out that signals an awaiting message. A few of the smalle rislands have runners assigned to retrieve logs once a day and post waiting messages on the boards in town so you can check instead of having to go to the Tech-Comm everyday.   The Alien Invasion Incident of Toshi14 even led to the island of Yoronri being abandoned by all of its people and having them frantically transport to another island. The message receiver Signaler Hiroshi misinterpreted one of the signal letters and thought it said "aliens from space had broken through the veil and were coming across the channel to invade" when in fact the intended message was "an old family had returned from the veil and was coming across the channel for dinner".   Honest mistake.
