Yatir

Usage

This is the spice that The Niafell Genasi are most known for. Spicy and sweet in nature, this is cultivated for the singular purpose of celebration and ritual feasts, such as the week-long festival for Soul in the Star. Often, shopkeeps will order in bulk to be able to sell this spice for longer periods at a raised price after the given festival. This spice is only able to be harvested three times a year, planted in correspondence with the three main festivals in Iedar Tegon.

"Our water, however dangerous, seems to produce something magical within that the Yatir thrives for. It's undrinkable to us, but it appears to be what makes it so this spice can even grow. This is the only thing our masters have been able to come up with for why Yatir is only grown in Niafell."

Cultivation

The reason this spice is so carefully cultivated is it is seen as an item with religious significance for the Niafell Genasi. Commonly referred to by them as the "mother spice", it holds a special place in all of the Genasi that live there. A bundle from their first harvest is kept in their home above the door, added to the first bundle of their family, passed down through generations.

Rarity

Difficult to grow, it has only been successfully farmed in Niafell. Likely due to the rather unseemingly fertile soil, it provides a wide array of nutrients that can't be found elsewhere, yet at least. For many reasons, this is why Niafell Genasi have such a strong bond with this plant, they give eachother life in so many ways. Some of the Genasi believe that the ability to grow Yatir exclusively in Niafell has to do with the unique landscape, particularily the water being "poisonous" once it reaches the surface.
