Shuhos, often simply called the
far east, is the largest of the five known continents in the world. It lies east of
Eucros and north of
Ekkezan, with
Matsumaya off its eastern shores. Shuhos is populated by many different peoples and races and has a vast and varied geography. Unlike Eucros, which is unified under the United Republic of Carcosa, Shuhos is divided into many different soverign regions and city states and has had no dominant power until the formation of the Matsumaya Dominion in 1695. The division of Eucros and Shuhos reflects the east-west cultural, linguistic, and ethnic differences of the two regions.
Geography
The geography and climate of Shuhos varies greatly. The western edges range from arid to temperate, becomming hotter further east and cooler along the Sorrow Sea to the south. The northern half of Shuhos tends to be much colder, and consists of many boreal forests, tundras, and fjords. The Bone Mountains are located in the middle of the continent, and stretch over 1000 leagues east to west. North of the Bones lie the Great Plains and the cold giant forests of Eblistan, and south of the bones lie the Dundao Desert, the jungles surrounding the Sorrow Sea coastline, and the free cities. Maps of Shuhos vary wildly east of Najma, with no accurate maps of the areas surrounding the Vale of Tears and central Dundao desert available to western scholars. It is known, however, that east of the Bones lie the exotic lands governed by the Matsumaya Dominion, consisting of many great cities and vast exotic wilderness of forests, mountains, crags, swamps, and grasslands.
The Bone Mountains
The Bone Mountains, commonly called
the bones, are a colossal mountain range located in central Shuhos. The tallest mountains in the known world, they are a natural land barrier between Eucros and the exotic far east of Shuhos. The mountain range is named after the multitude of bones left behind by creatures attempting to traverse the range. There are many roads leading into the bones, but only a handful are known to lead out, and are used by only the most experienced of travellers. The climate of the bones is harsh, with extreme temperatures and weather that changes at a moments notice, and winds rumored to be strong enough to lift a horse off its feet. The bones are known to contain rivers, canyons, caves, and subterranean seas, and many creatures make their home among the peaks. Bones of men, ox, horse, giant, dragon, and monsters of all kind can be found in these savage peaks.
Dundao Desert
The Dundao Desert, also known as
the great sand sea, is a massive desert valley and canyon, south of the Bone Mountains and north of the Sorrow Sea, and is said so stretch at least another 500 leagues past the city of Najma, though this is hard to confirm as western maps of the far east vary greatly. It is the largest desert in the known world, and some scholars believe it to be an ancient inland sea that has since dried. In the north you can find salt flats, sand blasted cliffs, buttes, plateaus, and the massive dry canyon known as The Great Divide. South of the divide and beyond lie endless sand dunes, eroded valleys, and hidden oasises. The Dundao is home to many different races and tribes and is a melting pot of cultures from both the east and the west. Cities between the Dundao Desert and the Bone Mountains include Najma and Rindaj along the southern coast, and Orzo in the north. The desert is known to be scorching hot during the day and freezing cold at night, and are host to violent sandstorms regularly. Various flora and fauna are found in the Dundao, especially in the many oasises throughout the desert, such as the Dundao Tiger, Orzo Crocodile, and Emperor Beetle.
Sorrow Coast
The Sorrow Coast, often called the
coast of sorrows, is the more temperate region south of the Dundao Desert bordering the Sorrow Sea, stretching from Port Kirahe in the west to beyond the Vale of Tears in the far east. The coast is characterized by sprawling jungles of giant trees, exotic wildlife, and colorful desert valleys. The climate around the coast ranges wildly from arid to tropical depending on the region, with some areas being prone to both sandstorms and flash floods alike. Many of the free cities are located along the Sorrow Coast, and most scholars believe the Gulf of Najma to be the busiest trade hub in the known world. The Sorrow Coast has also earned a notorious reputation for rampant piracy and crime, as well as its massive slave trade.
