Rito
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
The main language that the Rito speak is common Hylian, although sometimes good friends or partners can get simple ideas across using only squawks and chirps.
Shared customary codes and values
The Rito put a lot of value in freedom, often taking the phrase "the sky is the limit" very literally. However, they are also a very hardworking and often punctual type of people, especially those who work at The Rito Post Office.
Common Etiquette rules
While it might be tempting for foreigners to ask to feel a Rito's wings or feathers, it's generally frowned upon unless it is offered by the Rito, themself, or if they are very good friends.
However, it is not frowned upon in Rito culture to eat very quickly, very messily, and/or in large amounts. This is usually a sign that the Rito has worked very hard that day, the meal is exceptionally good, or both. It's actually sometimes baffling to other races how much food a Rito can pack away.
Common Dress code
The Rito, as bird people, generally don't actually "require" clothes, though they have adapted to some Hylian clothing customs over time, so long as the clothing doesn't inhibit flight. This means that most Rito tend to at least wear some sort of tunic and/or sash most of the time.
Art & Architecture
Over time, the Rito have managed to create crafting techniques that can be done with their winged appendages. (Some are still confused on how they manage to "hold" anything with wings, but it hasn't been too closely questioned thus far.) This has led to things such as simple, tribal wall paintings and weaving, simple but elegant in design.
Rito architecture tends to center around tall trees and rock outcroppings, with Rito-made, wooden ledges and perches added on for easy access to roosts and nests. Their buildings and additions are sturdy and functional first, with other decorations such as paintings and rugs added on afterwards.
Coming of Age Rites
Long ago, young Rito would take a sort of pilgrimage to visit the Great Dragon Valoo atop his perch to receive a scale from his back, and therefore the blessing and ability to fly. However, now the journey to Valoo's daughter, Vakii, and the following ritual is mostly ceremonial, though it can still be a challenge to some fledglings. Vakii, the kind soul that she is, always appreciates seeing the young Rito and welcomes them graciously into adulthood. Some, after meeting the Great Dragon, even choose to stay with her as her acolytes.
Funerary and Memorial customs
When a Rito dies, whether in battle, old age, or accident, a few of their feathers may be taken by close friends and relatives and added to their own plumes, kept in place with bright beads and jewelry in their memory. Once that has been taken care of, their body is burned on a tall pyre, and what ashes aren't naturally scattered to the wind are taken by a loved one. That Rito then flies as high as they can go and scatters the rest of the ashes, letting them be blown away on the wind.
Common Myths and Legends
Legend has it that the Rito originally came from the same line as the Zora people. However, when the oceans covered hyrule, the great Dragon Valoo gave them the choice between staying as fish people, or gaining wings and the ability to fly. Those that chose flight were given a scale from the dragon's back, altering their bodies and therefore creating the new race.
Ideals
Beauty Ideals
The Rito love anything flashy or shiny, whether it be metallic jewelry, or beads, or bright-colored scarves and other trappings. Strings of beads often will be worn just behind the ear.
Gender Ideals
The Rito, as bird-people, are one of the more "binary" races in Hyrule, but only slightly. Males tend to have brighter plumage and longer feathers, while females' feathers are more muted, usually brown, grey, or even black. However, despite this, both genders are encouraged to wear any bright or shiny trinkets they may come across on their travels, and while there may be some confusion if an individual doesn't act like their assigned gender, once everything is explained and cleared up, the Rito are generally quick to accept things and move on.
Gender roles, should the particular Rito choose to follow them, generally manifest as women taking care of the chicks, cooking, sometimes minding shops around the Roost, and men working either as guards and warriors or traveling great distances as Rito Postmen.
Courtship Ideals
The Rito as a people love dancing (whether it be in the air or on the ground) and giving gifts. Rito festivals usually center around music and dancing, where one might try to woo another with their moves. Valuable gifts, such as clothing or jewelry, are also a well-recognized form of flirting. (The shinier, the better!)
Relationship Ideals
When Rito choose to marry or mate, it's generally for life. Their nest is cozy and well-kept, and they strive to make each other happy. The best relationships tend to come to life in the air as the pair dance around each other, sometimes seemingly as one mind.
Major organizations
The Rito Post Office is considered the pride of the Rito as a people, as flight is the most effective and fast way to get mail and parcels delivered.
