Elinor (El-ih-norr)

The illustrious capital of the Kingdom of Evergnon, Elinor is a proud city standing on the side of the sea. Across from the rich Hydric to the east and the forests of the west, Elinor is the powerhouse of the region, capable of sustaining great riches as well as a substantial population for a nation of its size. As none of Evergnon’s other cities reach, let alone surpass 50,000 in population, Elinor sprawls out into the surrounding countryside. It also holds the mightiest port on the eastern coast of Tzunar, well surpassing any of Vulgar or the southern alliance.

Demographics

The population of the city and surrounding countryside is predominantly human, though about 3% of the population belongs to the Oqitianni centaurs, a significant minority in western Evergnon, as it borders the centaurian governates of the Dominion.

Government

What can best be described as a feudal nation, the king of Evergnon’s power is limited by the ever present dukes, barons, counts and lords under his vassals, hereditary positions who often vote for or against any law changes the king attempts to pass, effectively rendering him at their mercy.

Infrastructure

Being coastal, a large port exists as well as docks for Evergnon’s navy, which is the largest proportionally to the population of any nation in the Forbidden Isles.   The practise of taking seawater and evaporating it in steam houses, using the salt for medicinal and culinary purposes and the water for drinking, is said to have originated in Olmese times, and Evergnon was its starting point. The saltpits are a source of much of the Isles’ salt deposits, particularly thanks to the nearby caves they can also be harvested from.

Districts

In the northeast of the city, around the coast lies the mercantile district, where traders from across the world sail or walk to make business. Many goods from around and beyond Elinor make their way here. Further south, the headquarters of the Elinor navy lie. In the northwest of the city, past the richer landowners, who dwell there as guesthouses or as permanent residents. This includes foreign ambassadors as well. The centre of the city is where the king and his family live, inside the spectacular pink fortress of Highheart, along with delegates from across the kingdom, and the High Minds, the council who assist the king in rulership. The southwest, in contrast to the aristocracy of the northwest is home to some of the poorest areas of the city, and it is no coincidence that much of the city’s centaur population lives here too.

History

Elinor existed before under the Olmese name of Ena, with the earliest known written reference to the settlement dating to The Sapphire Chronicles of 450BF. Once Olm collapsed and the tribes and cities of Tzunar’s east coast were forced to fend for themselves, Ena changed hands multiple times until it was renamed Elinor. When Evergnon’s first king rose to power, he chose this city as his new capital due to it sharing the name of his queen. Ever since, the city has grown well beyond its rivals in the Evergno basin.

Architecture

Richer buildings tend to have white painted bricks and red roofs, though wood and basic stone make up most of the poorer residents and merchant guilds.
