Napolean has been defeated and suffers upon a lonely isle where he is haunted by Epiales, the God of Nightmares. While the little emperor suffers, Europe is slowly reforming into nations old and new. It is not a peaceful reforming and wars rage in several places.

Beneath it all, the gods of yore wander, seeking out the faith of mortals without being noticed by the angels of the new gods. Dreams and nightmares have grown, now that Morpheus and Epiales walk the world, something the angels have blamed on the Napoleonic Wars though they just might learn otherwise.
