To have a movement that is unified and effective when its cause is publicly discouraged by figureheads and the elite you need signs and signals. These signs and signals must be common so anyone could use them but unique enough that a message is not seen where there is none. For this purpose and this cause what better item to use is the lantern? Every ship in the world has lanterns but you may have any shape or color you desire. You can find imagery of lanterns on anything from clothing to architecture. And furthermore Lanterns give off light, and is that not what we are here for?

Significance

Lanterns are an important part of everyday life in most cultures. There ability to give off light while protecting the source and preventing accidental fires make the a tool that is especially necessary in enclosed spaces such as ships, mines, libraries, and dungeons.
Lanterns symbolically represent light and guidance in most cultures, though how that guidance is interpreted varies.
In Maphni lanterns are commonly used to represent communication in the dark or night. As they are a seafaring culture and lantern signaling is a skill every man woman and child knows. A counterculture/social movement in Maphni called the Seafellows subtly use lanterns as a code to convey tidbits of important information about themselves and the area.
