Dance of Shame

Dance of Shame is a ritual that involved "dancing" with a pig, then using that pig as a sacrifice, to prevent a person from becoming a Dancing Soulless.

Confession

When someone is fearful that they may have angered the Gods, they will ask the priest for help. The priest will hear their confession. In most cases, the priest will agree and suggest that a sacrifice has to be made.   For most villages, pigs are a commodity, a valuable resource that isn't just for sale. The price for a pig is far too steep for an ordinary peasant to pay. As such, trying to buy a pig is a very obvious signal of ones guilt. One has to confront their shame and guilt, before they are ready to take this step.   Once they've asked to buy a pig, a communal meeting is held to decide whether the people of the village are willing to sacrifice a pig. In most cases, they will want to know what transgressions the buyer has committed, to take into account during their deliberation. The meeting includes negotiations, up to the point of a communal verbal contract being agreed upon, in which the guilty person agrees to years of community service to pay for the pig and repent for his shortcomings.

Ritual

Once an agreement is made, a symbolic ritual is held. The bereaved will throw themselves on the ground next to the pig and behave as a pig, rolling through the dirt. It is encourages to touch the pig, even hug it, to transfer filth from themselves onto the pig. Depending on how severe the crimes are, this can take hours, before the priest calls an end to it.   To finish the ritual, the hand of the ashamed is washed and so is a part of the pig's skin. The priest then does a chant, as he cuts the hand and the pig's skin and places the wounds over each other. Once the chant is complete, the filthy person is free to wash and treat their wound.   The filthy pig is then put in a small enclosure with a thick and decently high fence to keep the predators out as much as possible. Either the priest or the repentant feed the pig to keep it alive.

Goal

The pig is in a sacrifice, in case the Gods indeed want to punish the person, They can punish the pig instead. Then a demon would take possession of the pig and be caged from the start.   After a arbitrary number of years, the priest can declare the sacrifice is no longer needed. They'll claim that the Gods have forgiven the confessor, or that they've been punished enough. In any case, the pig is released from its solitary confinement and will be quickly fattened up and prepared for slaughter.
