The Church of Twelve Organization in How to Live in a Fantasy World | World Anvil

The Church of Twelve

The One Church refers to the religious organization that supports the *[Realm]*. It remains active in each of its counties and oversees that people worship the approved deities from the pantheon.
The most important task of the church is to document and research skills that come from the manifestation of souls. And they carry out several rituals for children who move from adolescence to adulthood. The coming to an age is the most important ritual that any citizen can take part of, and participation has been made mandatory according to the laws of the realm. There are no exemptions of this in any of the counties.
As observation of the countless skills and blessings granted by the world; (gods according to the church), is the primary function of the priests. This allows the church to function despite of conflicting opinions and clashes between the teachings of the different gods. The church only attempts to coexist with the conflicting religious views that comes from the pantheon.
It does not try to accommodate the views of others. As such, the church finds itself constantly in conflict with the various orders of magic. This is especially true because the magic organizations don't outright ban shadow magic. The relationship between the various orders of magic and the church are similar to a cold war. Neither faction(s) make any moves on the open, yet they constantly work to undermine each other(s) from the shadows.

Dark Mage Hunt

The church is actively hunting demon cultists and heretics. People who were born with black mana often find themselves unjustly prosecuted by the inquisition. While this is a real social problem, the practice has continued for hundreds of years. The church has especially close ties with the great nine families. In general the church is more lenient towards magic for members in these nine families. Indeed, only the wealthy and nobility are exempted from this blind prosecution. Commoners are often hunted, if they are found to resonate with dark mana.
It is common that people who are born with dark mana, find themselves in a situation where they are forced to become a part in one of the various magical orders or during their flight from the church, their only alternative is to become the very thing, they are accused of.
Due to the church's opposition to black magic, commoners often turn their anger on people with black mana. In some counties this has resulted in mindless slaughter of innocents. There are a few counties where the inquisition is does not operate, and this task is instead given to the governing organization. Majority of the seven great families personally hunt for heretics. Unlike the church, the great families have a more neutral approach towards dark mana. Living in counties such as Crowald offers a rare opportunity for peaceful life for those born with black mana .
However, Crowald and House of Acedia also has a very bloody history in purging heretics alongside the inquisition. The witch-hunt in The Black Forest was one of the most violent purges of dark mages in the history. The church commonly commisions House of Acedia to send its knights when the church has trouble dealing with a heretical coven of demon worshipers.
