Vidrazin Keep
Vidrazin Keep stands in sombre isolation at the entrance to the Mabon Channel, its crumbling walls and shattered towers silhouetted against the crashing waves below. Once a formidable stronghold of the old Thalissian Empire, the keep was built to guard Mar Mabon's northern coast from seaborne threats. Today, it is a ruin, its battlements broken and its courtyards overgrown with tangled briars and creeping vines. Yet despite its derelict state, Vidrazin Keep still holds a certain allure for those who dare to explore its lichen-covered corridors and weathered halls.
The keep’s location, perched atop a rocky promontory, offers an unparalleled view over the channel, making it a tempting refuge for those seeking to avoid prying eyes. Local legends tell of hidden passageways and long-forgotten tunnels running beneath the keep, their true extent known only to those who have delved deep into its catacombs. Its subterranean vaults, protected from prying eyes by treacherous terrain and crumbling ceilings, have become the perfect staging ground for a smuggling operation spanning the channel.
Under cover of darkness, smugglers from the Terosian town of Lespir have begun using Vidrazin as a secret drop-off point for illicit goods. Led by the cunning Rovan Kell, a former merchant turned criminal, the smugglers have established a network that traffics contraband between Lespir and Mar Mabon. Their operation takes full advantage of the keep’s ruins: supplies and stolen goods are hidden in concealed chambers beneath the keep, while small boats slip into a sheltered cove at the base of the cliffs. The winding paths and treacherous cliffside tracks, long forgotten by most, provide a perfect route for moving goods inland without arousing suspicion.
Rovan Kell’s operation has flourished, supplying everything from stolen weapons to forbidden tomes and dangerous alchemical concoctions. His ties to corrupt officials in Lespir ensure that he remains a step ahead of the authorities on both sides of the channel. However, the smugglers have recently begun to attract unwanted attention. A series of intercepted messages has alerted the Peacekeepers in Lespir to the existence of a major smuggling route, and a small detachment has been tasked with locating and shutting it down. Kell, wary of betrayal or capture, has redoubled his efforts to secure his hold on Vidrazin, sealing off known entrances and trapping the lesser-used routes.
