Tower of Zalmar
The Tower of Zalmar stands on a small, rocky island just off the northeastern coast of Mar Miskun, overlooking the Bay of Penstrarn. A solitary sentinel against the crashing waves, the tower is named after its former occupant: Zalmar Anfane, a talented Guardian who resided here during the early 20th century. Zalmar was a skilled healer and herbalist.
Though the tower has long since fallen out of use, the legacy of Zalmar’s magic still lingers in the unique medicinal herbs that grow around the tower, thriving despite the inhospitable conditions of the coastal island.
The tower itself is built of pale sandstone, the same colour as the cliffs of the Mar Miskun coast. Its structure is a simple cylindrical design, rising four storeys high, with a flat roof encircled by a low parapet. Small, narrow windows run up the length of the tower, and a single iron-bound door, weathered by years of salt and wind, marks the only entrance at the base. Though battered by the elements, the tower remains in relatively good condition, with few visible signs of structural decay.
The interior of the tower is plain and functional. The ground floor houses a small entry hall and a storage room, where wooden shelves hold rusted tools and empty crates—remnants of the tower’s brief use as a supply station for the League’s patrol boats. A spiralling staircase winds up through the central shaft, leading to the higher levels. The second and third floors consist of a series of bare chambers that once served as Zalmar’s living quarters. Though empty now, faint traces of magical wards can still be felt in the air, a testament to the protective enchantments the Guardian-mage placed on his domain.
The top floor, however, is the true heart of the tower. Here, a single large room with arched windows overlooks the restless sea. The room is filled with natural light and has a strange, serene atmosphere, as if the tower itself remembers its former master’s presence. A single wooden table, faded with age, stands in the centre of the chamber, covered in carvings of magical symbols and circles. It was here that Zalmar is said to have practiced his art, blending his knowledge of healing magic with his affinity for the natural world.
Many medicinal herbs grow on the island around the base of the tower. Beyrian bushes, with their fragrant flowers, can be found here in small clusters, its petals prized for their ability to calm the mind and aid in mental recovery. Larionda, its berries a potent remedy for disease, is another resident of the island’s windswept slopes. The hardy Arraxosa can be found clinging to the cracks in the tower’s foundations, its bright red petals a stark contrast against the dull stone, and Hagleaf grows in rocky gulleys.
