The Crommis tree is a small, golden-leaved tree known for the
medicinal properties of its sap, which serves as a potent to a variety of poisons. Revered for its healing abilities, the Crommis tree plays a crucial role in the lore and practices of many cultures across Helerin, particularly in regions where its presence is rare.
Form and Appearance
The Crommis tree is relatively small, with a slender trunk and smooth, light-grey bark. Its crown is adorned with shimmering, golden leaves that turn deeper in hue as the seasons change. The tree produces small, round fruits resembling inedible apples. Its sap, the tree's most valuable feature, seeps from cuts in the bark and has a distinctive amber color, thick and sticky to the touch.
Habitat
Crommis trees flourish in temperate and shaded environments, often growing within dense forests or at the base of hills where the soil is rich and well-drained. These trees prefer cooler, more humid climates, thriving in places where rainfall is moderate to high. Crommis trees are typically found scattered in small clusters, never forming large groves, which contributes to their rarity and the high value of their sap.
Geographic Distribution
Crommis trees are primarily found in the deep, temperate forests of
Great Forbin, particularly in the woodlands surrounding
Gilrim and the lower slopes of the
Minark Mountains. In these regions, the trees are closely guarded, as their sap is prized for medicinal purposes. Occasionally, they can be found in hidden pockets of forest in
Teros Major, but they are much rarer outside of Forbin.
Uses
The sap of the Crommis tree is highly sought after due to its effectiveness as an antidote to various poisons.
The sap is typically harvested during the spring and early summer months, when it is at its most potent. Healers across Helerin use the sap to treat venomous bites, toxic ingestions, and other ailments related to poison. Its sap is also applied to the lesions caused by
Tirax’s Kiss and is used in washes to eliminate the lice responsible for
Redmoult.
Crommis sap is often carried by adventurers and travelers venturing into dangerous regions where venomous creatures are a threat. In some areas, the sap is so highly prized that it is traded as a valuable commodity, sometimes fetching exorbitant prices in regions where Crommis trees are not common.
