Castle Kamand

Castle Kamand stands as a sentinel on the frontier of Jalussan, guarding the region’s northern border with Bostin. Its thick grey walls and stern towers rise above the gently rolling plains, a stark reminder of the power and authority of the Realm of Forbin. The castle’s strategic position makes it a key military outpost, with its garrison tasked with keeping watch for any incursions or unrest both along the frontier and from the sea.

Despite its outward appearance of strength, the leadership of Castle Kamand is far from steadfast. The castle is ruled by Lord Alshinn Motta, a nobleman of meagre courage and even less resolve. Lord Motta’s tenure has been marked by a sycophantic eagerness to win the favour of the Golden King, Trybon Fane, whom he idolises to an embarrassing degree. More concerned with sending lavish gifts and flattering letters to the court of Holdras than with the day-to-day governance of his lands, Motta has earned a reputation as a man of weakness and vanity.   The interior of Castle Kamand reflects Lord Motta’s preoccupation with appearances rather than substance. The halls are adorned with portraits of the king, tapestries depicting Fane’s victories, and other ostentatious displays meant to highlight the Lord’s loyalty. Lord Motta’s personal chambers are filled with letters and trinkets meant to curry the king’s favour, while his armoury and storerooms remain poorly stocked and inadequately maintained.   The garrison of Castle Kamand suffers under Motta’s leadership. Soldiers complain of insufficient supplies and poor morale, and the castle’s defences, while still formidable, lack the discipline and readiness that should define such an important military outpost. Many of the men stationed here resent Lord Motta’s craven nature and his constant neglect of their needs in favour of pandering to the whims of the king. As a result, the garrison’s loyalty lies more with their captains and each other than with their lord.   Yet Lord Motta’s sycophancy has not gone unnoticed by the Golden King, who sees the timid lord as a pliable tool. Motta’s eagerness to please has led him to implement unpopular measures, from raising taxes to enforcing draconian trade restrictions, all in the name of proving his loyalty to Fane. His willingness to obey even the most unreasonable commands has made him few friends among the local nobility and earned him quiet scorn among the people of Jalussan.
