Winter Lantern Festival

I had never seen this many lights before - the entire river was glowing like the sun itself as children with colourful ribbons in their hair set paper lanterns full with prayers for good health and academic success on the water. Couples would wish for steady love and fertility, and even the little ones would ask their seniors to help them with their calligraphy. It was a spectacle for the eyes, my friend, but I heard that in some regions they will have lanterns fly up in the sky, which must be a truly spectacular sight to behold.

The Winter Lantern Festival is celebrated in the two weeks surrounding Winter Solstice, so from the 11th Manwol to the 12th Chosaengdal. It corresponds to the Summer Lantern Festival from 5th Manwol to 6th Chosaengdal, thus surrounding the Summer Solstice.
