Aegis

A nation founded in 2008 by a group of idealists fleeing the Earth Unification Wars to the planet Athena.
Aegis is a democratic nation that has a fairly weak central government. The Metis System, where Athena is located, is usually referred to as Aegis Capital. This star system is the only one that is directly governed by Aegis itself. Every other system is fairly politically independant. There are some laws that all members must follow, but the majority of their affairs are left to themselves.
Most of the federal laws are concerned with protecting and outlining the rights of Aegis citizens. Citizens travelling between systems that are part of Aegis might as well be visiting a different country. The general culture of Aegis typically highlights this in a positive light and contrasts it with the authoritarian United Earth Government.
