Episodes 1-14
General Summary
Episode One: Sorry for Your Loss- Our adventure opens on the party discovering that they have collectively inherited the estate and responsibilities from the late Bryn Paling. Almost immediately upon receiving this, the party was visited by agents of the Bleak Knights asking after Bryn’s body, followed by a member of the Lavender Society announcing that Bryn’s death was a murder, and finally Jib was visited by Handsome Leila who informed him that his father, Akom, had died. It would seem that the New House of Pailing is having a difficult start.
Episode Two: Enemies Abound- The House of Pailing convened and delivered their decision regarding the body of Bryn to Paralictar Shikuaq. Though not thrilled, he appeared to respect the house’s choice. Afterward there was a brief sparring match in which Gab got his ass swiftly handed to him and in the evening the group made their way to the Ruby Aura Casino, a den of debauchery where the well-to-do come to spend their money on vice and flesh. We rejoin our heroes as they meet with the young Archdemon Walker Asmodeus.
Episode Three: Fires Over the Embassies- While traveling away from their rather tense first meeting with Walker, in which the group agreed to cooperate in both finding Bryn’s killer and finding out how the Watchers entered the city without any of the major powers knowing. Upon leaving the casino, the House of Pailing was attacked by the Harpers, specifically the leader Vantokyo who summoned his landshark, Sharkespeare, to cover his escape.
Episode Four: The Plot Deepens- The party divided and was confronted with several new revelations, there’s a serial killer on the loose and the Hunt has called for reinforcements from the Custodi Nobille Morte, the Principi has nothing to do with the Watchers in the city, and the Mavon Paladins have declared total war on not just the Principi but the Vaylian Trading Company (and consequently the Republics themselves), the Machine Orthodoxy, and “all heretics”. Running out of leads, it would appear that Jib may have to float the idea of traversing the undercity to the party.
Episode 5: The Depths- The party spent much of their time in the Undercity lost but there was an eventful moment when Jed was nearly lost to a deep chasm. There was also the discovery of a massive mound of kith hands, 51 pairs, each one bearing the mark of Rigphin. Needless to say, discovering the cereal killer was even more prolific than first imagined was not comforting. We open now on the House of Paling who happened upon a small squadron of Watchers, one of whom is mortally wounded.
Episode 6: Lost Library- The party was not moved to violence, though one of the Watchers was extremely hostile to them, Zaphrina most especially. In the end, however, one of the paladin’s own comrades put her to the sword because she had endangered their mission. As thanks for saving Alex’s life, Reese gave them the address of a safe house, so that they may repay the favor at a later date.
Episode 7: Things Worth Knowing- The group had the singular pleasure of meeting a Talon of the Custodi Nobili Morte, the very one that had been called to investigate the sequence killer running rampant in the city. Then, at long last, the party reached the Broker who gave them the knowledge they sought. And what knowledge it was. The party discovered that the Harpers were working together with the Watchers to smuggle them into the city and not only that but the whole coalition was being led by none other than Kel Mavon, sworn paladin of Soge.
Episode 8: The Price- Finally making their way out of the undercity, our heroes don’t immediately head back to the estate, instead going for a drink with an old friend of Gab’s. This turned out to be less relaxing than originally intended as Tab informed the party of the attack on les Pomiers in which nearly everyone was slaughtered by Harpers and Watchers. After drinking away some of the blues, Jib especially, the gang returned home to an uncharacteristically frazzled Artemi who mentioned they had a guest staying there that night and that, once everyone was sober, there were urgent matters to discuss. Dispersing to bed, Gab was confronted in his bedroom by Eileen, clutching the letter he’d received at the reading of Bryn’s will.
Episode 9: Gab the Ripper- The truth was finally revealed! The most prolific sequence killer in generations is none other than Gabriel Mercy, noble heir to the Paling estait. A battle broke out between House Paling and Eileen the Crow. Although she was rebuffed, the damage to the group was ultimately done not by her but by the betrayal of their own companion. Absconding in the night, Gab’s darkness was revealed in full when he even turned on the man who saved him from justice, striking him down and consuming his tongue.
Episode 10: Heavy is the Head- A rough night for everyone to be sure. At the first ring of the new day, the Estate was graced by the presence of the Archdemon Taggoth and her Concubine (also known as Jed’s mom and dad). Truly fortuitous, because Gus was able to convince Jed that his “mistake” (trusting Gab) was not indicative of who he was as a person overall. Bolstered by this vote of confidence from his father, Jed decided to stay with House Paling and see this through to the end. Finally the group was left with a decision as to who to approach to be their patron, in light of the fact that they now had no money and no influence left to exert in the city. Just when they had settled upon approaching Walker, the group received two messages. A cryptic one from the Machine Orthodoxy and a more direct one from Waterlung Tolamdir.
Episode 11: ex Machina- The party makes their way to meet with the Principi and Tolamdir. On the way, Jib finally spills his guts about his connections to the Principi sen Patrena and to the Mavon Paladins. Tolamdir informs the party that the worst has happened: Kel has gone on the attack and has brought Soge’s Fire with her into battle. With this knowledge in mind, House Paling divided in two with Jed attempting to appeal to Walker for aid and the rest traveling to the Machine Orthodoxy’s cathedral where they learned that prior to his death, Bryn had commissioned an airship to be built. In addition, they were outfitted with an experimental weapon called a “Pale Emitor”. Meanwhile, though Jed was unable to secure Walker’s aid, Silas did promise the assistance of everyone in the Lavender Society he could get together.
Episode 12: Family Matters- After a reconvening, the party agreed to attempt to secure the support of the Screwtape family. They met with the Archdemon Sloan in her restaurant where she killed an entire string quartet over the course of their negotiations. Ultimately, the party decided against allying with such an unstable individual. She did, however, let slip a “family secret” that Jed was not in fact a demon. This led to an uncomfortable conversation with Gus in which it was revealed that Jed’s parents didn’t know that he didn’t know that he wasn’t a demon. Truly a wild comedy of errors that lead to a person leading a completely different life from what he might otherwise.
Episode 13: The First Crusade- Pope Zaphrina I stood upon her balcony on the first day of Deturam (May) in the year 1090 and declared that the faithful of Tazrix shall engage in a crusade against the Mavon paladins. The remainder of the episode was spent dealing with the political fallout of this action. Ultimately, the Assembly of Ignorance issued the following edict: “Your crimes will be forgiven, the power of the Bleak Knights will be yours in this time of crisis. But you must provide a member of your house as a sacrifice to wear the mask of the Ignorant King.” With this in mind, the party resolved to find and capture the missing Gabriel and force him to dawn the mask, ending his rein of terror in the city.
Episode 14: In Your Heart Shall Also Burn- With Eileen’s cooperation secured, House Paling set about preparing for their confrontation with Gabriel. Cilla sought out a place where she could get ruined with rum and indulge in other fleshly pleasures while Jed and Zaphrina found company with one another. Jib, however, went to look at his former residence when he was waylaid by a familiar face–Sera’a. Following the serpent led our intrepid paladin to the depths of the Marrow Cathedral where a group of Harpers, including Vantokyo, had invaded attempting to capture it. With them were captives, Gus, Ulra, and a woman that Jib did not recognize. Thankfully the Harper infiltration was outmatched by the increased forces gathering there for the crusade. Unfortunately, Vantokyo had a contingency plan in the form of explosive dead bodies. The paladin managed to escape with his sister in tow but Gus was last seen in the custody of Sloan Screwtape. The siblings shared a briefly joyous reunion before Ulra revealed the truth, that she had been the one to deliver Bryn’s death warrent.
