Dragons and Bogatyri

General Information

Dragons and bogatyri are born with an incomplete soul. An egg of a dragon and bogatyr are conceived at the same time the bogatyr and dragon mothers keep their eggs together to stimulate a bond as the eggs develop. Dragons and bogatyri hatch at the same time as the one they bond with. A dragon and bogatyrs together are born with one complete soul. While they are separate physically, spiritually they are one and if one of them dies so will the other.

Dragons stand 2.7 meters tall on average with a 4.5 meter wingspan. Their forelimbs double as their wings and are structured similarly as azhdarchidae (family of pterosaurs). They have tough scales on their bodies that sparkle like gemstones. The scales over their wings are soft and feather-like. Bogatyri are humanoid with skin the same color as the scales of the dragon they are bonded to. Bogatyri also have sharp teeth and claws that are black in color. A dragon and bogatyr bonded pair is always the same sex.

Aura and Strength Differences

Male dragons and bogatyri have five aura gates and have slightly more physical strength, speed, and stamina than females of their kind. Female dragons and bogatyri have six aura gates and their aura pools double the size of males. Females have more flexibility and control over their aura than males, so much so that it doesn’t matter if males are physically stronger. Female dragons and bogatyri always have the upper hand in a fight.

Both sexes can use their aura to control the seven elemental forces: metal, earth, wood, water, wind, fire, and lightning. Females have more control over these elemental forces and send plumes of these energies out of their bodies to attack from a distance. Female dragons discharge the elemental forces from their mouth while female bogatyri use their hands. Males have minor control over the elements and coat their teeth and claws with these energies. Occasionally bogatyri of both sexes fashion weapons to use in battle, usually bows and arrows or atlatl. Though their weapons are vastly outclassed by races such as the dvergar and dökkálfar.

Culture Structure

The female dragons and bogatyri vastly outclass males of their kind in terms of strength. On top of that, their clan leaders, the zmei, are always female. This creates an unequal balance of power between the sexes in their social structure. The females control and protect the clan. Even the youngest female dragon or bogatyr has more say than the oldest male in the clan. The males are more or less there to answer to the females sexual desires and wait on them hand and foot. Male dragons and bogatyrs also gather food, raise the wyverns that their kind eat, and play minor roles in guarding their clan’s territory.

Traits and Attributes

Dragon’s and bogatyri’s lifespans are about three centuries. Females reach physical maturity in their third decade and their aura fully matures in their forth. Males reach physical maturity in their second decade and their aura fully matures in their third. They can survive half as long without food and water as the zmei. Dragon eyes have two sets of cones and two sets of rods. One set of cones to see blue waves of light, the other to see red waves. One set of rods sensitive to visible light and the other sensitive to infrared. Their sense of smell is twice as delicate as the bogatyri. Bogatyri also have two sets of cones and rods but for different functions. One set cone is for blue visible light, one for green visible light. They have one set of eye rods for visible light and the other for ultraviolet light. Their sense of hearing is twice as delicate as a dragon’s. Through their shared bond, they fill in the pieces and create a complete picture of the world around them.

Eating Habits

Bogatyri and dragons are both omnivores that eat primarily vegetation. Most of their diet comes from foraging nuts, berries, fruits, and young greens. Dragons also fill their diets with grasses, roots, and leaves. Only the smaller portion of their diet comes from meat.

Naming Traditions

Dragons and Bogatyri are named after crystals and stones. With a bonded pair sharing different parts of a name. For example if a female dragon and bogatyr were named after Obsidian, the dragon would be named Obsi and the bogatyr would be called Dian. Together the different parts of the name is whole. Female dragons are always given the first half of the name while male bogatyri are given the first half. If a make bonded pair was named Obsidian the bogatyr would be called Obsi while the dragon would be called Dian.

Bogatyri From Slavic Lore

The bogatyri were the heroes in old Rus epics and folklore passed down in verbal tradition. They were warriors that were comparable to the gallant knights in shining armor in the fairytales in Central Europe. Many of these bogatyri were real people that had their stories and history built up into mystical and fanatic tales similar to King Author.
